Post subject: Philippine E-Commerce: Issues and Concerns (need inputs) |
|
|
Guys, I got an invitation to join an E-Commerce Forum with an objective to assess the issues, problems and challenges in the implementation of e-commerce and come up with recommendations to address said concerns.
I have until next week to submit issues/concerns that can be discussed during the forum and also confirm my participation. I would like to get inputs from our group for any concerns and issues that you might want to be discussed and resolved. I believe that many of us will benefit if the existing problems in the local e-commerce will be given solution to. This is the venue for our concerns and ideas to be heard so just post a response here and I will consolidate everything next week for submission.
By the way, the said forum is a project by DTI (Department of Trade and Industry) and CICT (Commission on Information and Communications Technology) and in partnership with the PICS (Philippine Internet Commerce Society).
Thanks in advance.

1 big point po para sa di mapipigilang existence of scammers.
1 point to spammers (either unsolicited advertisements sent through pm etc, or spamming the site of their own ads).
both for general ecommerce lang, sulit in particular has made effective changes that i guess "tamed" those.

1 - Payment gateways: limited local payment gateways and expensive to have one!
2 - Limited or no quality control of items sold online.
3 - No assurance to buyers about legitimacy of the sellers.

While the rest of the world are already online to the e-commerce, the PHilippines is still discussing whether we are to go into e-commerce. It is thru that there are a lot of scammers and hackers in the PHilippines but so do in the States and Europe. These problems should not be a hindrance as it can be solved. the only problem is those in the government are not serious enough to push thru e-commercialization. In e-commerce, let buyer beware always.

Yah, kulang lang kasi sa advertisement ang programs ang government about sa IT eh... kung meron naman kasing mga magagaling na IT Managers who are competitive enough para mag create ng programs, nasa abroad naman... kaya ung mga natitira na lang dito na available eh mga nasa mas mababang level na. and beside pa nga dun, mahina support ng goverment sa IT department. d ba?
I once had online website and gumamit akong 2checkout pa nuon for the payment gateway kasi lately lang nagkaroon ng connection ang paypal with UnionBank. medyo mahal nga talaga sa Unionbank. sana mabigyan ng solusyon itong mga issues na to ng governement...

if i want to join the ecommerce, ehemmm, revolution, what are the the problems and concerns I will encounter?
1. Good Computer Education
Do we have a solid program for computer education? I do not have the numbers but I will hazard a guess that not even close to 25% of the population have computers at home. Therefore, the only exposure to computers would be at schools. Most of the computers (read: 1 or 2 apiece) at public elementary schools are merely for show with not enough backbone. Most high school students out there learn to use the computer by sheer determination to join the thousands of youth on Friendster. I dont know what to think of that, on one hand I congratulate Friendster for singlehandedly educating our youth on the possibilities of the internet, on the other, well, they seem to think that Friendster in the only site in the web. All others, just advertisement. I just wish they'd visit Wikipedia more.
2. Price of Internet Connection
You can get a free wifi connection at Starbucks for free. If you spend a hundred and twenty bucks for coffee. Internet connection is too costly for many judging by the proliferation of internet cafes around the country. And then, if you cannot afford the monthly fee, you end up spending more on rented computers with connection.
3. Internet Connection
Sometimes being in Manila makes me forget a whole bunch of important stuff. I've been to a lot of provinces and the problem is still internet connection, and if there is, is the speed sufficient to make the effort worthwhile? How many minutes or hours will you spend just to download an adobe pdf attachment? Will I be able to send an email at all?
And these are the stumbling blocks before even timidly opening an account in Ebay or Sulit, or Tipidpc or even Pinoyexchange.
The rest have been more or less enumerated above.

Congress should enact bills regulating the use of internet and penalizing spammers scammers and people who use someone else's information/pictures without the consent of one directly involved. If we have sufficient laws restricting these bad elements, Philippine internet users will have more trust on the internet system. Ecommerce will then meet its glory in our country.
In North America, Europe, and in other Asian countries, people are used to transacting business online, making orders and paying them online.
Philippine websites lack software to accomodate secure payments, or facilitate orders. People are not yet open to this kind of online shopping because of lack of trust and massive security issues.
We really lack government support and regulations. If we would be able to meet the mimimum requirements and security level, not only Filipinos would trust the system, but also foreign nationals. Hence, even Filipino working from home could earn foreign currencies online.
