Long-Range WiFi
The Toshiba Satellite A75-S231's ($2,500 as tested) desktop-like build is by no means slim, and it packs in some decent multimedia features. The 3.33-GHz Mobile Pentium 4 548 processor, 100GB hard drive, and DVD/CDRW drive are especially useful for home video editors.
The 15.4-inch widescreen is great for movies and photos. The screen incorporates Toshiba's TruBrite technology, which gives it a glossy finish that most movie watchers will enjoy. The full-size keyboard is typing-friendly, and the touchpad is placed right in the middle and not too far back from the keyboard, which we like.
The A75-S231 comes with some pretty neat stuff for avid home video editors. There's the whopping 100GB hard drive and a DVD/CDRW optical drive. It also has a FireWire port to connect to your camcorder, and three USB ports are scattered around for the rest of your peripherals. An S-Video port and a VGA port are located on the back.
Player controls (Play/Pause, Stop, Rwd, Fwd) lie next to the keyboard, giving you easy access to your DVD movies. A button above the player controls launches a preboot function that plays your audio CDs only.
SYSmark scores were very impressive, The inclusion of the ATI Mobility Radeon 9000 integrated graphics is nice for such a powerful machine.
This solid system includes plenty of bells and whistles, such as a wide 15.4-inch display and dedicated CD-control buttons, typically found on top-of-the-line laptops. We tested the Toshiba Satellite A75-S206, whose mobile Pentium 4 processor rocked CNET Labs'
benchmarks.
