I. PROJECT TITLE: Website Development Using Content
Management System (CMS) : Building
Online Stores with Open Source (OS)
Commerce
II. IMPLEMENTING AGENCY : Philippine Trade Training Center (PTTC)
III. PROJECT DESCRIPTION/OBJECTIVES:
Open Source Software (OSS) can be defined as computer software for which the human-readable source code is made available under a copyright license (or arrangement such as the public domain) that meets the Open Source Definition. This permits users to use, change, and improve the software, and to redistribute it in modified or unmodified form. It is often developed in a public, collaborative manner.
Why Open Source?
Many organizations recognize and are embracing the economic benefits of choosing open source solutions as an alternative to proprietary software (a computer software on which the producer has set restrictions on use, private modification, copying, or republishing. Similar terms include "closed-source software" and "non-free software") to create business-critical enterprise applications. These are mainly because of increasing concern about vendor lock-in, software price increases, escalating support costs, abandoned products or releases, and cancellation of support of proprietary software products. Open source software offers an alternative option based on its reliability, security and scalability. Integration of open source into development environments is well-suited for all types of enterprise business requirements when it has been correctly developed and deployed.
More and more people are skipping the shopping malls and opting to shop online instead. Online sales is increasing and this wasn't just in the consumer industry - more businesses are opting to purchase products and services online. However, most people particularly the businessmen are hesitant due to lack of information and lack of opportunity on how to do it.
There are a number of payment gateways operating in the country such as Kaban Internet Payment Solution, Globe G-cash, Paypal (send/receive money only), BancNet Internet Payment System, Yespayments, etc..
The objective of the course is to equip micro, small and would-be entrepreneurs with the knowledge on how to use build and maintain a complex, powerful e-commerce website using osCommerce. It will also build the confidence to experiment with own enhancements and modifications and an excellent resource for developing the business strategies and practices, as well as making it easy to continuously enhance the customers' shopping experience. Building website using OS Commerce is free since this is an open source content management system.
