Midlife beckons to a journey. Midlife is all about the process of reclaiming our own soul. It is the time to let the inner man or woman takes over the steering wheel of the becoming. It is the “second journey” of our lives. Let go and move on? There’s something more to ourselves than we have ever thought.
Midlife calls to an intimate romance. Individuation invites us to fall in love, this time, with ourselves. Far from the selfishness of narcissism, midlife is the season to be conscious of the on-going process of creation through our external and interior lives. Time to embrace the emerging new self.
Midlife recreates the Sabbaths of life. There will not be any rebirth unless there be dying. Such is the archetype of life. There has to be some decay; but there necessarily has to be resurrection. The night has to come, but the night has also to end. And through it all, the human spirit floats; it does not frantically swim.
Midlife welcomes renewed spirituality. Spirituality is the way one lives one’s life. It follows that the spirituality of the second half of life is vastly differentiated from the spirituality of the first half of life. The spirituality of the midlife person corresponds to the psychological tasks and personal growth required of the second half.
