¤«¤ STERLING SILVER

• Pure silver is quite soft, too soft and malleable for use in jewelry. That’s why almost all jewelry is made of sterling silver is defined, by law as 92.5%. Pure silver and 7.5% other metals, usually copper. The high percentage of pure silver allows it to keep a high degree of its characteristics and value while giving the metal hardness and strength.
• To make sure you are getting real sterling silver you need to look for the “925” stamp or “Italian Silver” stamp. If there is no stamp then it is not sterling silver.

¤«¤ TARNISHABILITY

• It’s a little known fact, but Pure Silver does not tarnish in pure air and pure water. It’s pollutants in air and water that cause silver to tarnish, specifically trace amounts of sulfur gases in the air and hydrogen sulfide in water. Light speeds up the silver tarnish process. For this reason, it’s a good idea to store your silver jewelry in a zip-lock bag and keep it out of the sun.
• For the best ways to prevent tarnish and/ or clean silver liquid cleaner.
• Hot water with baking soda and some salt (couple of teaspoons of each). The tarnish will be pulled off silver to the foil-in cases of heavy tarnish, you will be able to see it flaking off. Leave it for more than 5 minutes, rinse and dry.
