Suzuki Alto bests 52 vehicles at econo run test
THE small but terrible Suzuki Alto tops the "midnight econo-run" held last October 23 to 24, 2008 with a starting point at Edsa, passing the North Luzon Expressway (NLEx) to Subic-Clark Tarlac Expressway (SCTEx).
Organized by the Department of Energy (DOE), the event was participated by a total of 52 different vehicles representing 14 brands running the 333-kilometer (km) long at the DOE's most extensive fuel consumption run to date.
Participating vehicles, which cover all types of sedans, sports utility vehicles, multi-purpose vehicles and pickups, maintained a speed of 40 kilometers per hour (kph) while 80 kph was set at the NLEx and SCTex. There were no LPG-powered vehicles allowed and had only one stop during the entire run.
In the end, a sub-compact with the smallest engine emerged to be the most fuel-efficient car during the test. The 0.8-liter Suzuki Alto (gasoline-powered, manual transmission) obtained a fuel economy of 34 km per liter plus a fuel cost of P1.38 per km. The mileage is far better than the many motorcycles making it truly economical.
Ideally suited for today's economy, the new Suzuki Alto boasts of an impressive F8D engine, which effortlessly handles any situation from city driving to the open road. With its lightweight, Alto launches quickly into fast traffic and easily keeps pace with highway speeds.
The ride is smooth at highway speeds and on city streets, not to mention quiet due to the much technological advancement, sound deadening materials and overall body construction to reduce road, wind and power train noise.
Above all, Suzuki Alto sets the record to be the most economical car as shown during 7-hour test conducted by the Department of Energy.
