FACTS ABOUT VITAMIN C
What is Vitamin C? Vitamin C is the most important water-soluble biological antioxidant. It can scavenge both reactive oxygen species and reactive nitrogen species. It may also have anti-atherogenic, anticarcinogenic, antihypertensive, antiviral, antihistaminic, immunomodulatory, opthalmoprotective and airway-protective actions. Vitamin C may aid in the detoxification of some heavy metals, such as lead and other toxic chemicals. It is a potent anti-oxidant protecting against free radicals, pollution, carcinogens, heavy metals, and other toxins. It is strongly anti-viral and mildly anti-bacterial. Energy cannot be made in any cell, brain or muscle without adequate vitamin C. The adrenal glands have a high concentration of vitamin C which is essential for stress hormone synthesis. Vitamin C is so central in so many chemical reactions in the body that, without it, life is simply not possible.
Vitamin C and Collagen Collagen is the protein that forms connective fibers in tissues such as skin, ligaments, cartilage, bones and teeth. Collagen also acts as a kind of intracellular "glue" that gives support, shape and bulk to blood vessels, bones, and organs such as the heart, kidneys and liver. Collagen fibers keep bones and blood vessels strong, and help to anchor our teeth to our gums. Collagen is also required for the repair of blood vessels, bruises, and broken bones. As the most abundant protein in the body, collagen accounts for more mass than all the other proteins put together.
Our body is continually manufacturing collagen to maintain and repair connective tissues lost to daily wear and tear. Without vitamin C, collagen formation is disrupted, resulting in a wide variety of problems throughout the body.
Cardiovascular disease (CVD) & Vitamin C
New research has shown that people with high levels of Lipoprotein(a) or Lp(a), have a much higher risk of heart disease. Analyzing the findings from 27 studies, British researchers found that those patients with high levels of Lp(a) had a 70% higher risk of developing heart disease over a period of 10 years. The Startling Facts about Lipoprotein(a) - Lipoprotein(a) levels are largely determined by inheritance.
- Special diet does not influence lipoprotein(a) levels.
- None of the available cholesterol lowering drugs lower lipoprotein(a) blood levels.
- Ascorbate (vitamin C) and niacin both lower lipoprotein(a) blood levels.
- L-lysine and L-proline, two natural amino acids, can prevent the apo(a) adhesive from sticking, serving as a kind of Teflon coating. These amino acids also assist to shrink the plaque which is already present.
- Lipoprotein(a) blood level is the single greatest risk factor predicting the restenosis of vessels used in bypass surgery.
The late Dr. Linus Pauling, Ph.D., the only double Noble prize winner, and fellow researcher Dr. Mathias Rath, M. D., hypothesized that Lp(a) levels may be increased in some cases due to a vitamin C deficiency. They note that Lp(a) is found mostly in the blood of primates and the guinea pig, which have lost the ability to synthesize ascorbate (vitamin C), but only rarely in the blood of other animals which still produce their own supply. The core of Pauling's theory is that, over time, the body developed a repair mechanism that allowed it to cope with the damage caused by chronic vitamin C deficiency. When arteries became weak and began to rupture, the body responded by "gluing" the damaged areas together with Lp(a) to prevent a slow death from internal bleeding. In essence, plaque is the body's attempt to patch blood vessels damaged by low-level scurvy. Accordingly, Pauling believed that conventional "triggers" of plaque formation, such as homocysteine and oxidized cholesterol, are actually just additional symptoms of scurvy. They also noted that the 2 substances possess some similar properties, such as in the acceleration of wound healing and other cell-repair mechanisms, the strengthening of the extracellular matrix (e.g., in blood vessels), and the prevention of lipid peroxidation. Therefore, they suggested that the body intentionally sythecizes Lp(a) when it is lacking an adequate vitamin C supply. In his Unified Theory, Linus Pauling often recommended 3,000 to 5,000 mg per day as an effective dose to prevent atherosclerotic plaques. Anecdotal reports from patients using the Pauling Therapy indicate that rapid recovery is frequently the rule, not the exception, allowing many people to avoid open heart surgery and angioplasty. Cancer & Vitamin C
Back in the 1970’s, the two-time Nobel Prize winner Dr. Linus Pauling and the Scottish Dr. Ewan Cameron published their Cancer and Vitamin C research. They demonstrated that regular high doses of Vitamin C can be effective in the prevention of cancer, in the treatment of exisitng cancers and as an adjunct to other types of therapy for cancer, either conventional or alternative . Vitamin C helps to support our natural defenses against cancer. It supports the encapsulation or sealing off of tumors and therefore resists metastasis or the spreading of the cancer. It reduces cachexia or severe weight loss. It enhances the immune system. It improves overall health. Cancer patients taking therapeutic-dose Vitamin C report an improved appetite, increased mental alertness and a decrease in pain.
Dr. Cameron, a physician and surgeon in Scotland , worked with more than 500 hospitalized, terminal cancer patients. Most of his patients had been treated with surgery and radiation. About 80 percent of his initial patients with pain from cancer in the bone obtained major pain relief in 2 weeks or less. His patients lived an average of 12 months, while 10 percent of his patients achieved 5-year remission. The controls, those without vitamins, lived an average of 3 months. None of the controls lived longer than a year. Cameron's demonstrated therapy was cheap and simple: vitamin C in the form of sodium ascorbate at 10,000 mg/day.
How much Vitamin C does one need?
Most animals can make vitamin C, but humans cannot. Haven't you ever wondered how it is that certain pets, like dogs and cats, can eat bacteria-ridden garbage and, providing they are not poisoned, they have no difficulty in staying healthy? For example, a 160-pound goat can make 13,000 mg/day. Dr. Cathcart used 200,000 mg/day on some of his patients and treated over 9,000 patients with large doses of Vitamin C. Hoffer and Cathcart often adjust the dosage to the bowel tolerance limit, especially if the patient is very sick (a method called Titrating to Bowel Tolerance). Sick people can take much more vitamin C without having diarrhea than can healthy people. Apparently a sick person requires and can use more vitamin C. If cancer patients on high doses of vitamin C develop diarrhea, the dosage is reduced. Many people have taken 30,000 mg/day for extended periods.
