NOTES:

Salvia is an ego-killer. Everything you think you know, you don't. Most of the people I've talked to and from my own experiences, reality is ripped away and replaced with something foreign.

ADVICE:

(1) Use a water-cooled smoking device (a water pipe, or bong). This makes it much easier to inhale large quantities of smoke. Because the smoke is cooled, it can be inhaled more comfortably without coughing.

(2) Make sure that the pipe stem and screen are not clogged with residue from previous use. It is important that the pipe draws well. Check it before use to make sure that you can draw air through it easily when you inhale.

(3) Try to inhale the full dose in three big inhalations. Each one should be inhaled slowly and deeply, then held for 20 - 30 seconds before exhaling. It is very important to retain each inhalation of smoke deeply in the lungs long enough for it to be absorbed efficiently. Do not pause between exhaling and taking the next inhalation (except for a short breath of fresh air if necessary). This insures that the whole dose will be consumed within the 2 - 3 minute period required. If the dose is smoked too slowly, the salvinorin A will be metabolized faster than it is ingested.

(4) Salvinorin A requires a high temperature to vaporize. This can be easily achieved by making certain that the leaves are in direct contact with a flame the entire time that you are inhaling. When inhaling, hold a flame directly over the bowl of the pipe so that the flame is drawn down into the leaves as you inhale the smoke.

(5) Use a torch-flame lighter. Many people report better results when using this type of lighter. These produce a very hot torch-like flame that causes rapid combustion of the smoking material and hence produces more concentrated smoke. Because of the extra heat generated by these devices, it is important to use them in conjunction with a water-cooled smoking device.

A book written about the effects of Salvia Divinorum, quotes Daniel Siebert's summarization, mentions that the side effects of smoking Salvia may include:

- Uncontrollable laughter.
- Past memories, such as revisiting places from childhood memory
- Sensations of motion, or being pulled or twisted by forces
- Visions of membranes, films and various two-dimensional surfaces
- Merging with or becoming objects (for example a Ferris wheel)
- Overlapping realities, such as the perception of being in several locations at once

Other Salvia Divinorum side effects have been known to be:

SALVIA EXPERIENCES: WHAT TO EXPECT

Salvia experiences range in intensity from subtle to extremely powerful. This holds true for chewed leaves, smoked leaves, and for oral tinctures, such as "Sage Goddess Emerald Essence®." The strength of the effects will depend on how much you take, the way you take it, and your individual body chemistry.
Noise and distraction will interfere with the experience. When on Salvia, watching TV is nothing but annoying; sitting around a campfire in the woods at night, is wonderful. Because Salvia divinorum can alter perception and behavior, it must never be used in a public environment--doing so could draw unwelcome attention.

 When the effects are intense, people often become immersed in a dream-like inner visionary state of awareness. Sometimes people in this state will move around as if sleepwalking. When Salvia is smoked the effects come on very quickly, in less than a minute. The effects are only strong for 5-6 minutes, and then they quickly taper off over another 20-30 minutes. When the leaves are chewed, the first effects come on at about 15 minutes and gradually develop to peak about 30 minutes after ingestion. The peak level of effects lasts 30 minutes to an hour, and then gradually diminish over an additional 30 minutes to an hour.

When taken as a tincture held in the mouth, the effects begin in 10-15 minutes, and quickly develop to a peak level that lasts 20-40 minutes. The effects then gradually diminish over an additional 30 minutes to an hour. To be on the safe side, it is important not to drive or use machinery for at least an hour after the experience appears to be ended.

Usually people feel clearheaded and mentally refreshed after a Salvia experience. Occasionally some people experience mild headaches after smoking Salvia. It appears that such headaches are the result of smoke-induced sinus irritation. Like tobacco smoke, Salvia smoke is probably somewhat irritating to the lungs.

Hey Everyone,

My name is John and I am the quality control tester for Black Hat Botanicals. When the owner of BHB first asked if I would review some of their products, the first thing I asked was, "Will you pay me?" He laughed and offered me to take me out for lunch as compensation for every review. Not exactly what I had in mind, but beggars can't be choosers, so I accepted.

Some background on me. I'm 24 years old, just out of college. I've done some stuff in my day - nothing hard or crazy - but never tried Salvia, Kratom or the other products BHB sells, so this is my first experience with all of them. I'll try to keep the reviews short and to the point. I might curse a lot, so if young children are present GET THE FUCK OUT OF HERE! BHB products are strictly sold to 18 years of age and up. It's a policy I agree with completely. Kids should be playing with barbies or going to Miley Cyrus concerts, not reading about stuff they're too young and immature to handle responsibly.

I sat back in the couch with a glass pipe in my left hand and the lighter in my right. Lit up, drew some air, exhaled, took a deep drag full of smoke, cleared the chamber and held it in as long as I could, maybe 20 seconds.

I don't remember exhaling the first hit. Suddenly the voice of my sitter came from out of nowhere, "Do you want me to take the pipe?" I felt waves of pressure pulsating through my body. It felt like something was trying to lift me up by my temples. My sitter's voice felt out of place, foreign. "No, I think I should take one more hit." We had packed the pipe with maybe a quarter gram of 10x, and it felt like a waste to let it burn. I focused my mind and brought the lighter to the pipe, but by then I felt reality giving way. "I won't make it. Take the pipe! Damn you guys make some good shit." I was gone...

Salvia is like nothing I have ever experienced. Reality as we think of it completely ceases to exist. You feel almost reborn into a universe with different rules. The laws of gravity, matter, energy, everything feels different. I was enveloped in a kaleidascope of light and sound and movement. I felt myself falling, being pulled through some vortex and then, like a swing, I was flying back. I felt on the edge of two worlds, caught in some "no man's land" between them, where the energy and rules of one collide with the other. It was terrifying and completely peaceful at the same time. I swung from one world to the other and back again. I wanted to cross over, to reach for the clarity and beauty of the other side, but each time something pulled me back. If only I could hold on to something... I felt myself grasping a ray of light, but it dissolved in some spiritual equivalent of my physical hand. I held on to the swing and just rode it, enjoying the lights. With each revolution I was swinging shorter of where I had been before.

Self-identity, memories, reality began to reemerge as I came out it. All the baggage in my life came rushing in - responsibilities, obligations, mistakes... I realized that in this entire time I had been free of them, I had been just myself, pure. My sitter came into view, smiling at me. "Are you ok?" I stood up. My mind was beginning to clear up but my body was still feeling the effects of pressure and tiny pins and needles wherever my skin touched something. I felt like I had just traveled to another dimension.

"Whoah, sit down." My sitter got up and walked towards me. "No, no, I'm fine. I'm coming out of it." Still feeling the trip, I realized how stupid that must have sounded to someone who knew I was high and was trying to keep me safe. My sitter insisted, "That's fine, just sit down." I sat down, feeling the effects of Salvia wear off. There was a feeling of clarity, joy, freedom. My limbs were full of energy and I could barely keep still. If only people knew of this universe, if only they could experience what I experienced, to understand how we fight about nothing, how we're all really connected... I wanted to run around, to tell someone what I had discovered, the worlds I had seen, the purity and beauty.

And now I have. The entire experience lasted about twenty minutes. From the time that I took my first hit to the time I came back into reality was maybe 5 solid minutes, though it felt much longer. I was able to function normally after about fifteen minutes. The effects wore off completely within an hour, though I still felt a little strange being back in the world, like a halo in my mind, for the rest of the day. It was a very personal experience. I can't wait to try Salvia again, maybe even in higher strengths next time.

After my crazy 10x experience I didn't know if I wanted to do Salvia again. Two weeks later, I couldn't wait to continue exploring this incredible herb. There's just something about it... What: Salvia 40x Extract

When: November 15th, 2009

I sat back in the couch, filled the glass pipe with maybe a tenth of a gram of 40x, lit up, drew some air, exhaled, inhaled a massive hit of pure smoke - too much! - choked up and coughed it out. Let's try that again. Salvia smoke is a bit harsh and can come out hot. A good hit of Salvia should be just enough smoke to be able to hold it in for at least 20 seconds, but not too little or you won't feel anything. There is definitely a sweet spot, and you just get a feel for it after a while. I took the second hit, perfect, and rested my head back, feeling a warm burn in my chest.

If on the 10x I could feel the trip coming, the 40x hit me like a freight train. An instant after I laid my head back, I completely forgot where I was, who I was or what I had smoked. When I finally released the smoke from my lungs the sight of it scared the crap out of me. I was in a vortex of consciousness, twisting and turning with the smoke as it raced through space. By the time the smoke had cleared, it felt like I just parachuted into another dimension, with a foreign intelligence occupying my mind as I stood to the side and watched in 3rd person. What I saw next I will never forget.

I can only describe it as a world built of fractals. My own body was sliced up into cartoonish, two dimensional colored circles. The ground under my circle feet was covered in golden scales - twisting, turning scales, like a moving snake, glistening in shades of yellow and orange. I then realized that the entire world was covered with these moving golden scales - cartoon houses, bubbly clouds and rolling green hills - all pulsating with these scales, like a single living organism, moving in one direction yet remaining perfectly still. In an instant this entire living universe became aware of my presence; it was as if a giant snake began coiling itself around me.

As the twisting enveloped me, I felt no fear; quite the opposite, I was at peace, serene. I could feel it speaking to me, and I remember responding to this rising, twisting mass of movement. I wish I could remember what the snake said to me. It was something powerful, something important that transcended the meaning of existence itself. It was as if I was meant to learn something there, the rules on which that world stood. I feel as though I should have taken this knowledge back with me, but what it was, or what purpose it served, I don't know.

The snake moved in closer around me, and as it did I welcomed it. I felt myself being swept up in the energy and knowledge of that world, twisting along with it. I heard something. Something pulling at me from the furthest imaginable reaches of my mind. It pierced the movement of the world and cut through the reality I was embracing, for just an instant. Wait! Again, that terrible sound. The snake began uncoiling. Not yet! I could feel the twisting golden world dimming before me. Stop, I almost have it! It was too late.

My consciousness returned in bursts as I struggled to hold on to the moving scales, their existence fading by the instant. I felt my eyes and opened them. The world was spinning. The physical world. I raised my hand and looked at it. After what I had experienced, I felt so limited by my body. The white light streaming through the window, the firmness of the couch under me... it was so simple, so solid, so boring. My eyes found focus. "John? Can you hear me? John?" My sitter kept repeating it over and over. Shut up! Why did he have to ruin it for me? I was so close. I closed my eyes, trying to hold on to the images, my mind still spinning. "Yes! Yes! I can hear you. Shhhhhhhhh..."

It took another fifteen minutes for me to be completely back. The sitter told me that a few minutes after I began tripping I started speaking incoherently, as though I was speaking with someone. I sounded completely calm, he said, but he couldn't understand anything. I had spoken real words but without any order to them, just gibberish. As with the 10x, I felt slightly surreal the rest of the day, and perfectly normal the next morning.

I don't think I'll be doing the 40x anytime soon. Whatever it was, I was not ready for it. There is a very deep, serious mystical nature to a Salvia Experience that is difficult to put into words. I hope I gave you guys enough of a taste, but my words can't do it justice. You just have to try it for yourself.

How to smoke Salvia Divinorum

If you have never smoked Salvia before, it is advised to start out your portion size small and build your way up. You don't know how you'll react the first time you smoke Salvia Divinorum, so, be sensible.

Several researchers have noted the potential Salvia has in helping the medical community find cures to serious medical conditions.

Assistant Professor of medicinal & natural products chemistry at University of Iowa, Thomas Prisinzano, has noted that Salvia Divinorum may have the ability to break a person's cocaine addiction: That's correct, research has suggested that salvia may actually help treat cocaine addiction

"You can give a rat free access to cocaine, give them free access to Salvinorin A, and they stop taking cocaine."

Director of the National Institute on Mental Health's Psychoactive Drug Screening Program, Professor Bryan L. Roth, has gone as far to say:

"We think that drugs derived from the active ingredient could be useful for a range of diseases: Alzheimer's, depression, schizophrenia, chronic pain and even AIDS or HIV."

If Salvia was classed as a Schedule I type drug, this would mean (in the eyes of the government) that there is no "currently accepted medical use" which couldn't be further from the truth and has scientists worried that banning the substance would restrict their work.

The salvia officinalis features spikes of blue-purple blooms that show for about four weeks in the spring. Another of the common salvia varieties is the salvia microphylla. This salvia is also known as baby sage, and features lovely salmon pink blooms. The stems of these salvia varieties do not get nearly as woody as other salvias do. Grown best in zones seven through eleven, these salvia varieties make a lovely perennial. A third of the salvia varieties are the salvia greggii.
