The Science Behind USANA
USANA is committed to nutritional research and development. That’s why we have a group of in-house experts dedicated to the latest scientific findings and clinical studies. USANA is also committed to research partnerships with nutritional experts and consults regularly with our Scientific Advisory Council—a group of independent health-care professionals dedicated to helping USANA create the best products possible.
“At USANA, scientific research is at the heart of every product we offer. Whether in studies conducted by top scientists in our on-site laboratories or findings from the many research partnerships we have across the globe, USANA is fully committed to the research and development of cutting-edge nutritional technology.
"And, of course, our state-of-the-art manufacturing facilities ensure that each product we create is made with the same high quality that set us apart from others in the past and will allow us to lead the field in the future.”
Dr. Myron Wentz
Founder and Chairman, USANA Health Sciences
USANA’s Scientific Experts
USANA’s world-class scientists review the latest scientific literature and clinical studies on important nutrients, vitamins, minerals, and phytochemicals. They also test the potency and purity of every USANA product to ensure complete and balanced formulas. USANA scientists come from varying fields of expertise, and most have published numerous papers in their careers.
| Tim Wood, Ph.D. Executive Vice President of Research and Development Dr. Tim Wood leads USANA’s scientific team and oversees research and development, quality assurance and quality control, and international regulatory affairs. He received his bachelor’s degree in environmental biology from the University of California, Santa Barbara, and a master’s degree and Ph.D. in the biological sciences from Yale University. Most recently, he received a master of business administration from Westminster College in Salt Lake City, Utah.
Dr. Wood has managed research teams for nearly 20 years and brings strong organizational skills and research expertise to USANA’s product development efforts. “There are three standards that must be met before a new formulation is incorporated into any of the USANA Health Sciences product lines,” he says. “These are proven efficacy, outstanding quality, and uncompromised safety.” |

| John Cuomo, Ph.D. Executive Director of Research and Development Dr. John Cuomo’s experience in synthetic organic chemistry, manufacturing, and analytical methods make his contribution to USANA invaluable. He holds over 20 United States and European patents and is the author of numerous scientific papers. "There are several areas that I think set USANA apart from other nutritional companies," Dr. Cuomo says. "The first is USANA's quality assurance in product development and manufacturing. Few companies have the level of quality control that USANA does. We spend a tremendous amount of time and money making sure that product composition exactly matches what's on the label. One of the ways we do that is through our in-house testing of ingredient potency."
Dr. Cuomo has seen many other companies include product lines solely based on the marketability of the products. "We won't jump on the bandwagon to join the latest health craze simply to make a profit." |

| Mark Brown, Ph.D. Director of Product Chemistry Dr. Mark Brown has completed extensive research in bioorganic chemistry and holds a Ph.D. in organic chemistry from the University of California and a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from California State University, Chico. With more than 15 years of chemistry experience, he is a valuable member of USANA’s scientific team.

| | John McDonald, Ph.D. Senior Scientist Dr. John McDonald is responsible for formulating new product concepts and is a resource for technical services and the science group. But he says his main responsibility is to be a repository of knowledge. "I'm paid to think," Dr. McDonald says. "In an age where urgency and immediate gratification are prevalent, taking the time to develop new product concepts and ideas is what I really enjoy about my association with USANA."

| | Brian Dixon, Ph.D. Senior Scientist Dr. Brian Dixon’s primary role is to facilitate and manage all clinical studies conducted at USANA. He earned a Ph.D. in molecular and cellular biology from Oregon State University, where he focused his research on the underlying biochemical mechanisms of the aging process and the therapeutic potential of lipoic acid. “Nutrition has always been close to my heart,” Dr. Dixon says. “I joined the USANA scientific team for their unyielding and uncompromising edict to produce the highest quality science-based health products in the industry."

Research Partnerships
In addition to conducting countless clinical studies in-house, USANA scientists often collaborate with respected universities and research centers to ensure our formulations remain on the cutting-edge of nutritional science and to test the effectiveness of our products in helping consumers achieve optimal health.
Linus Pauling Institute
In 2007, USANA announced a 10-year partnership with the Linus Pauling Institute (LPI). Based at Oregon State University, the LPI is one of the nation’s first two Centers of Excellence for Research on Complementary and Alternative Medicine designated by the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine of the National Institutes of Health. The LPI conducts research based on the idea that a balanced and nutritious diet is the key to optimal health. USANA works closely with the LPI to explore new products and ingredients and conduct extensive studies on the health benefits associated with key nutrients, such as vitamin D and alpha-lipoic acid.
Glycemic Index Foundation
A collaboration between the University of Sydney, the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation of Australia, and Diabetes Australia—the Glycemic Index Foundation (GIF) backs the GI Symbol Program in Australia. The GI Symbol Program is the only independent worldwide GI certification program requiring foods meet a number of criteria to prove they are a healthy choice within their food group. All USANA Foods carry the GI Symbol in Australia, and all testing data quality has been verified by the GIF.
Universities
USANA has partnered with a number of universities to conduct research studies, including the University of Utah, Boston University, and the University of Sydney. In early 2008, USANA announced the results of a large, third-party clinical study completed at the University of Colorado Denver, which confirmed that lifestyle changes, involving diet, supplementation and exercise, can improve metabolic syndrome.
