Clearitol’s List of Ingredients includes:
Dandelion Root (Taraxacum officinale): Dandelion, despite being looked at as just a weed by many, has been used since the 10th century for skin-related problems, including eczema. Dandelion has also been utilized as a treatment for a variety of other ailments, such as gallstones, premenstrual syndrome, and high blood pressure.
Burdock Root (Arctium lappa): This herb is used in Asian medicine and by homeopathic practitioners for acne and other skin conditions, like psoriasis and eczema. Studies have shown that the root may possess antimicrobial and wound-healing activity.
Yellow Dock (Rumex crispus): Yellow Dock has been documented as effective against skin inflammation and infection.
Echinacea purpurea: Echinacea, touted as the "herbal remedy for colds and flu," has been shown to boost the immune system and fight inflammation. Echinacein, a chemical in Echinacea, also helps broken skin heal faster. By inducing fibroblasts, the tissue-building cells of the body, to work more efficiently, new skin is formed at a faster rate to replace the damaged tissue from blemishes, cuts, scars, psoriasis, or eczema. Echinacea also contains echinacoside, a natural antibiotic.
Red clover (Trifolium pratense):Red Clover is one of the oldest herbs to be used medicinally, with evidence of its cultivation dating back to prehistoric times. Its popularity as a treatment for skin disease even resulted in its placement in the U.S. National Formulary until 1946. Red Clover is still taken internally for chronic skin conditions and externally for acne.
Sarsparilla Root: Only the root of this plant can be used medicinally. Although Sarsparilla has gained much of its popularity as a root beer flavoring agent1, Caribbean Indians and Native Americans have traditionally used Sarsparilla for skin conditions and urinary complaints. Studies have shown that Sarsparilla can also be helpful for treating psoriasis and leprosy.
Licorice root (Glycyrrhiza glabra): Licorice has been used for centuries to treat a number of different ailments, such as coughing, arthritis, skin inflammations, canker sores, herpes, and infections.
Kelp: Kelp comes from a marine plant and contains many minerals.3 It is most commonly used as a source for iodine, which works well as a treatment for mild thyroid deficiencies. It is also thought that Kelp regulates skin texture, an important factor for those with skin problems.
Cayenne (Capsicum annuum): Cayenne is most popular for its use as a pain-reliever. Cayenne’s active ingredient, Capsaicin, lessens the feeling of pain by depleting the messengers that send signals to the nerves that sense pain.1 It also acts as a stimulant and fights infection.
Other Ingredients: Rice Flour, Magnesium stearate
What casuses acne?
1. Hormones
For most people with acne, it begins at puberty. This is when the body starts to produce hormones called androgens. Androgens cause the enlargement and overstimulation of the sebaceous glands in people with acne. Sensitivity to these androgens also causes acne to appear during the menstrual cycle and sometimes in pregnancy. The extra sebum (oil) that the sebaceous glands produce mixes with dead skin cells and bacteria on the skin's surface and this blocks pores. Inside the blocked pore, bacteria multiply and cause inflammation leading to the spots and pustules associated with acne.
2. Stress
Stress can also cause the production of hormones, such as cortisol, which can aggravate acne.
3. Diet
Refined carbs/sugar = more insulin = more hormones = more sebum (oil) = more bacteria = more acne
4. Other causes
Acne is often genetic - Some medications and steroids - Heavy or oily make up - Over abrasive cleansing - Astringent facial products can dry the skin out causing the body to create even more sebum to compensate - Use of harsh exfoliators can damage existing spots and spread infection - Picking or squeezing of blackheads, whiteheads and spots can send the infection deeper into the skin and cause scarring - A diet high in foods that can aggravate acne.
How you can help yourself?
Skin needs to be cleansed from the inside out, there is no quick fix. If you really want to help your skin, you'll follow a healthy eating plan and exercise regularly. If you're healthy on the inside it will show on the outside.
