What is xylitol?
Xylitol is a naturally occurring sweetener found in many fruits, a safe and delicious FDA-approved sugar substitute that can help prevent cavities, plaque build-up, dry mouth problems, & bad breath.
Pure Xylitol looks (a little transluscent than sugar) and almost tastes like sugar (sucrose) but with 40% fewer calories.
Xylitol is NOT like other artificial sweeteners. Other artificial sweeteners can be harmful to both your teeth and your body.
Does xylitol reduce the risk of cavities?
Yes. Studies have shown as much as an 80% reduction in tooth decay for xylitol users over an extended period of time.
What makes 100% xylitol special?
Xylitol inhibits the ability of the cavity-causing bacteria (Streptococcus mutans) present in your mouth to adhere to the surfaces of your teeth, which in turn interferes with the bacteria’s ability to form dental plaque. Xylitol also reduces the acid producing potential of the bacteria, which some health professionals believe is the leading cause of tooth decay.
How does Xylitol help Dry Mouth Problems?
Xylitol's pleasant sweet taste stimulates salivary flow, which in turn increases the pH (pH 7.0)level in the mouth and neutralizes acids produced from other fermentable carbohydrates. Xylitol's combination of higher sweetness and intense cooling effect is particularly effective in increasing the salivary flow.
How does Xylitol help Fight Cavities?
Xylitol "selectively" eliminates harmful oral bacteria - (the ones that produce toxins and acids to damage teeth and gums). Xylitol also prevents these oral bacteria from producing sticky tendrils that allow them to "layer" on each other and stick to teeth.
How much and How often to take Xylitol?
At least a teaspoon and a half of xylitol per day, about 4 to 6.5 grams. It does not matter if you eat it in granular form, as mints or gum or even dissolved in a little water.
You get the remineralizing benefits( strengthening teeth) if you have the xylitol alone in your mouth ( mints, gum or granular) after meals and drinks.
You should use xylitol after meals, and split your daily amount into small quantities, to eat after each item you eat or drink during the day.
Is Xylitol a New Product?
Xylitol is not a new product.
Xylitol has been tested and consumed for over fifty years - in many parts of the world. It has been generally consumed for decades - with only positive health benefits.
Around 1890
The 5-carbon sugar xylitol was discovered by Fisher and Stahe in Germany and by Betrand in France.
1962
Xylitol was introduced in parenteral nutrition (infusion therapy). This demonstrated that large quantities of xylitol can be given to seriously ill patients (i.e. the human metabolic capacity for xylitol is high).
1963
The United States Food and Drug Administration approved of the use of xylitol for special dietary purposes. This endorsement is important as most nations have followed or observed this practice.
2006
The Academy of Dental Resources launches their “Xylitol Oral Health Program,” designed to help dental practices smoothly and efficiently integrate xylitol into their practices. They also develop training programs for patients and hygienists.
