Mix Your Own Feeds

Reduce feed cost 40-70% by mixing your own feeds. No machineries are necessary at the start. Buy instead locally-available ingredients, such as yellow corn, cassava, rice bran or corn bran.

What you need to mix feeds

1. A 20 kg or 50 kg weighing scale and a big basin and ladle for mixing the ingredients can be used at the start.

2. Polypropylene or polyethylene bags for packaging the mixed feeds.

3. A plastic heat sealer for sealing the packed feeds. Otherwise, use Scotch tape to seal the feed bags.

4. A formula for the particular feed that you want to produce.

A feed formula is a computer-generated and computer-balanced recipe listing the ingredients, their quantities or percentages by weight in the total feed, instructions for sourcing or buying the locally-available ingredients, mixing, packaging and storing the mixed feeds.

A commercial feed formula costs P750, which you can recoup immediately on your savings in feed cost. There’s also a hobbyist-type or pet owner type feed formula that costs only P300. (See instructions below for ordering a feed formula.)

Feed formulas for livestock, pets or fish

        Feed formulas are available for starters, growers and finishing poultry and hogs, as well as for poultry layers and breeders and pregnant and nursing sows and for pet dogs, cats and birds. Indicate if the feed is for starters, growers or breeders.. Feed formulas are also available for game cocks, game birds, ducks, geese, turkeys, quails, dairy and beef or fattener cattle, dairy and meat goats and other animals, commercial fish, prawns and shrimps, as well as aquarium fish.

        The feed formulas are easy-to-understand one- or two-page instructions for sourcing or buying the feed ingredients, mixing them and packing the mixed feeds. Sources of ingredients and equipment are indicated.

Whenever appropriate, there is also instruction on how to briquette, biscuit, flake or pellet feeds or pet foods using ordinary home tools and utensils.

        The feed formula indicates the locally-available ingredients to be used and percentages or weights in grams or kg. Each feed formula is computer-balanced and computer-generated and follows US National Research Council (NRC) standards and the latest research findings on animal and livestock nutrition.

How to order a feed formula

You may indicate also any ingredients—such corn, cassava, rice or corn bran--that are abundant and in cheap supply at or near your location. If not, the formula will indicate common feed ingredients that are locally or commercially available in most towns and cities in the Philippines or in your own country.

Each computer-generated feed formula costs P750. (A cheaper feed formula for hobbyists and pet owners costs only P300.) Both types of formulas satisfy NRC standards. What's the difference? A feed formula for hobbyists and pet owners contains only two-digit rounded-up percentages of the ingredients, so that it cannot be profitably used for commercial production or for commercial livestock production. Also, a feed formula for hobbyists and pet owners may contain fewer ingredients, for the pet owner’s convenience in easy sourcing and stocking the ingredients. On the other hand, a commercial feed formula contains 8 to 20 ingredients, each ingredient supplementing the others so as to give a low-cost feed. Delivery of feed formulas

Delivery is next day via email, fax, local or international courier or messenger service (with extra charge if by courier or messenger service). If you don't have an email address, an email address will be made available for you to retrieve the feed formula. If you don't know how to use a computer or the Internet, just go to an Internet Cafe and ask the Cafe supervisor to open and print the feed formula for you.

High-tech feed formulation

        In feed formulation, it is not exactly protein content of an ingredient that is important but the amounts of each limiting amino acids in the ingredient. Also, all required nutrients in the mixed feed should be present preferably in their proper amounts. Less or more is to be avoided as the deficiency or excess of a nutrient will affect the absorption of the other nutrients. Balancing feed formulas involve about 13 or so variables. The calculations involved in formulating feeds are very tedious if done with notes and a calculator, so big feed manufacturers usually use software to calculate and balance the nutrients.

        Animals are sensitive to the deficiency or excess of some nutrients so that poor growth, stunted and unhealthy animals that are susceptible to disease, or high mortality, is usually experienced by raisers who have no idea what's happening to their animals, prawn or fish.

The seller of the feed formulas has studied animal and plant nutrition for 10 years, has developed feed and fertilizer formulation programs, has lectured to feedmillers in Manila and Luzon in the early 1990's jointly with the Bureau of Animal Industry of the Department of Agriculture, has mixed and tried actual feeds and organic-based fertilizers, has raised livestock, fish, pets and honeybees and has planted plants and trees, and has served as feed consultant to cattle ranchers and as production consultant to orchard owners owning hundreds of hectares of fruit trees.
