Importance of Vermicomposting
Eco-conscious gardeners and farmers have found that they can have bigger yields and higher quality crops using vermicompost and vermicompost tea instead of harmful chemical fertilizers. Vermicompost does not harm or pollute the environment. Vermicomposting worms recycle waste that could otherwise end up in landfills. Vermicompost never burns your plants like overuse of fresh manure or conventional fertilizers do. Vermicompost contains a high level of humus. Humus helps keep plants healthy by resisting and breaking down bad intrusions such as pathogens and harmful bacteria.
Vermiculture was first introduced in Laguna by Dr. Rafael D. Guerrero III, (Ph.D.), resident of Bay (Bae), Laguna and pioneer of vermicomposting science and technology in the Philippines. It was Dr. Guerrero who brought the first batch of African Night Crawler earthworms (Eudrillus eugeniae) into the country in 1982 from Germany through the help of his colleague, Dr. Otto Graff.
