So how does the body avoid or minimize the destructive effects of excessive oxygen free radicals? The body has natural enzymes and molecules to quench oxidants. These enzymes and molecules are generally known as antioxidants. Antioxidants eliminate oxygen free radicals by donating an electron to the hungry free radical which neutralizes it. Some of the known vitamins are antioxidants found in food. These include vitamin A or beta-carotene, vitamin C, and vitamin E.
