Casa Gorordo Museum

(35 Lopez Jaena Street, Cebu City)

The Casa Gorordo Museum is named after the owner of the casa, Msgr. Juan Gorordo, the first bishop of Cebu.  The Ramon Aboitiz Foundation acquired, restored and turned it into a museum .  The Casa Gorordo is so wonderfully restored that 80-90% of the furniture and fixtures are original.  It is a cultural heritage site as the architecture distinctly reflects the late 1800’s era.

The precious Artifacts in the Casa Gorordo Museum will give an idea on the lavish lifestyle of the prominent Gorordo family, taking you back to the late 19^th century.  What is among the most remarkable is the 80-year old vine called the Bridal Bouquet, which serves as a shade in the azotea.

Church and Convent of Sto Nino (Basilica Minore del Sto Nino)

The Church and Convent of Sto.Nino houses the oldest religious relic in the Philippines, the image of the young Jesus Christ, which was a present by Magellan to Queen Juana and King Humabon.  It was built by Augustinian priests  under  Rev. Fr. Andres de Urdaneta out of Nipa and was razed by fire on 1566. The second church was likewise destroyed by fire in 1628 but rebuilt soon after (1628 to 1629).  The present  massive church was constructed  in 1737, and is designed to withstand fire, storms and earthquakes. Despite being set  in fire, the image of the Sto.Nino was unscated. The image inside this church since the time of Legaspi, is the center of intense devotion and religious pilgrimage in the Visayas.

Fort San Pedro (Fuerza de San Pedro)

Fort San Pedro is the oldest tri-bastion fort in the country.  Two bastions, named La Concepcion and Ignacio de Loyola faced the sea while the bastion San Miguel faced the land.  This was built under the order of Miguel Lopez de Legaspi in 1565 to protect the supplies of the Spaniards.  It was originally made of mud and logs until they had to build a stronger structure out of stone to repel the Muslim pirates.  The fort served many purposes after that.  It was a prison to Filipino rebels during the Spanish war, a barracks and a classroom to Filipino students during the American regime, prison camp, Japanese fortification and then a hospital during World War II.  The Cebu Garden Club turned the Fort San Pedro into a garden in 1950.  It is open to the public as a museum and a park.

Magellan’s Cross

Magellan’s Cross is the most famous landmark of Cebu City. It is originally planted by Ferdinand Magellan on 1521. Tindalo wood encloses the original wooden cross that Magellan brought during his expedition.  It is housed in a shrine with artworks depicting the first Catholic baptism in the country.

Colon Street

You have to visit this street if you want to take that so-called trip down memory lane.  It is the oldest street in the Philippines and until now still has some old establishments standing.  Colon Street, named after Christopher Columbus (Cristobal Colon, locally), stood witness to the many centuries of local civilization.  At present, it is the center of trade, housing important infrastructures such as banks and universities.  It is also the chosen stage for cultural events.  The Heritage of Cebu Monument is located on Colon Street, showcasing significant landmarks in Cebu’s history.
