The 2011 Hyundai Santa Fe

In a previous entry I blogged about the compact 2010 Hyundai Tucson crossover sport-utility vehicle (SUV). Recently, I got the chance to see its bigger brother, the mid-sized 2011 Hyundai Santa Fe.

The Santa Fe was first introduced in 2001 as the South Korean company’s first-ever SUV and like the Tucson, is based on a car platform too, in this case on the Hyundai Sonata. The Santa Fe is now on its third generation and to date has garnered many awards for safety, including a five-star rating from the United States’ National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

The 2011 Hyundai Santa Fe as sold in the Philippines is available with either a 2.4-liter Theta II (actual displacement: 2,359 cc.), four cylinder, double overhead cam (DOHC) gasoline engine with continuous variable valve timing, or a 2.2-liter R eVGT (actual displacement: 2,199 cc.), four cylinder, common-rail direct injection diesel engine. The gas engine puts out 174 ps., or 172 hp. at 6,000 rpm., while the diesel generates 197 ps., or 194 hp. at 3,800 rpm. Either a 4X2 or a 4X4 [It might be better to call it full time AWD though - Ed.] drivetrain is available across the two engine types, but only a six-speed automatic gearbox can be had.

Oh yes, the Santa Fe’s engine is certified by its manufacturer as either E10- or B5-compatible, as applicable.

Note the addition of dark wood trim on the dashboard of the Santa Fe, which I prefer over the light-colored kind one usually finds. In-cabin Bluetooth connectivity is standard, except on the 4X2 gas-powered model, which apparently is the entry-level Santa Fe model available in this country.

Speaking of entry-level, kudos to Hyundai for fitting a full safety suite across all of its Santa Fe models: dual front SRS airbags, an anti-lock brake system (ABS) with electronic brake force distribution, an active headrest for the driver and front passenger, and keyless entry with alarm, among others.

Note too the 6.5-inch TFT LCD screen mounted on the Santa Fe, a feature becoming standard equipment on many crossover SUV’s. Aside from showing videos, this LCD screen also serves as the information display for the built-in GPS navigation system. I would, however, prefer a gooseneck-mounted LCD screen either fitted on the dash on on the windshield so I can tilt it in my direction and easily see the scrolling map.

Like the Tucson, the Santa Fe seats five persons, but it can fit a maximum of seven thanks to the foldable third row of seats located at this vehicle’s cargo compartment.

The Santa Fe is available in the following colors: Vanilla White, Sleek Silver, Phantom Black, Superior Red, and Brown Metallic.

The Santa Fe can be had for as low as PHP 1,368,000 for the low-spec 4X2 with the gas engine, to as much as PHP 1,558,000 for the 4X2 with the diesel powerplant. and for the 4x4 1,788,000 with the diesel powerplant.
