There are 3 basic types of Solar Panels

1. Monocrystalline
2. Polycrystalline
3. Amorphous (Thin-Film)

We use Monocrystalline solar panels as it is the most reliable and the most efficient. The solar cells used in these solar panels are pure silicon that makes it more efficient and reliable.

Monocrystalline solar panels are generally considered the workhorses in the solar panel industry. They are readily available, and easily identifiable due to their uniformly stacked rounded cells. More wattage per square foot can be provided by these solar panels. The lifespan of monocrystalline solar panels is an average of 25 years and can be more than 50 depending on usage, making them a very good investment for long term use.

Solar Panels are also called PV or Photovoltaic Panels.

In order to determine the number and capacity of solar panels to use we need to know how many reliable sunlight hours we have for a day. We refer to Solar Irradiance or Insolation when we say “sunlight hours”.

The Philippines is a tropical country with 4.2 hours expected average reliable sunlight (solar radiation) per day (usually from February to October) and goes lower (around 3.8 hours average) starting November until January.

If continuous reliable power source is critical we should compute using the “3.8-hour” value.

In addition to determining the solar panels to use besides knowing the reliable sunlight hours, we also need to know the three most common sets of OFF-GRID solar energy systems:

OFF-GRID system is a solar energy system that uses battery for storage of solar power that can be used at night when there is no electricity coming from the sun generated by the solar panels.

As far as we know, there are only two manufacturing plants here in the Philippines. They are Sunpower and Solaria and unfortunately their high-efficient solar panels are either for export or their price is triple or even higher than their Chinese, Singaporean, Malaysian, and even Australian counterparts.
