1. Buy a Heat Press

If you print your own heat transfers on your ink-jet printer, you’ll need a heat press to apply the images to your shirts. If you buy your heat transfersonline, you’ll need a heat press. If you create your own heat transfers with a vinyl printer/cutter, you’ll need a heat press. And if you directly print your shirts with a direct-to-garment printer, you’ll need a heat press to “set” or “cure” the ink into the shirt. Don’t be tempted to use a home iron for this job. You’ll be sadly disappointed with the results — and so will your customers.

Heat presses come in a wide range of prices depending on size, automation features, and type. Be sure to buy the largest size you think you’ll need for the type of shirts you’ll be making.

4. Learn your Equipment and Software

This is probably the most important step in the process of building your T-shirt printing business.

T-shirt printing is not yet a plug-and-play process, which means you must invest time in learning how to effectively and correctly use your hardware and software.

Read the user manuals that come with your heat press and direct-to-garment printer. Watch any DVDs that are provided. Try to attend in-class hands-on training offered by the manufacturer or dealer. Buy instructional books related to your graphics software. Visit vendor web sites and look for tutorials, videos, or webinars related to your products. The more you know about your equipment, the more successful you’ll be in your T-shirt business.

If you have questions about using your equipment or software, call the vendor or dealer for support. You can also ask other users on forums at vendor web sites, or on independent user forums such as T-Shirt Forums. Learning from other users’ experiences and advice can be invaluable. 

5. Print Your Own Heat Transfers

Printing heat transfers on your own computer ink-jet printer has only recently become a viable option for someone wanting to start small in the T-shirt printing business. You use special commercial-grade transfer paper (not the kind from your local crafts store or office supply store), print your graphic image onto the paper with your ink-jet or laser printer, then transfer the image to your T-shirts with a heat press.
