ITENIRARY
Day 1 / OCT 18. ROME– MONTECASSINO - SAN GIOVANNI ROTONDO
Welcome to the Eternal City! After airport formalities we take a long distance drive to Montecassino, the Abbeyfounded by St. Benedict in the year 529 and built on top of a mountain. The Benedictine rule of “Ora et Labora”,meaning “Pray and Work” follows 8 hours of prayer, 8 hours of sleep & 8 hours of manual work or spiritual readingor charity. It is written that one notorious monk disagreed with this rule and tried to poison St. Benedict. When St.
Benedict made the sign of the cross, the chalice that contained the poison broke and the plot was discovered. Inanother mountain was the abbey where his twin sister St. Scholastica once led young women to the monastic life.We proceed to San Giovanni Rotondo - the small town where Padre Pio’s incorrupt body is entombed in the Churchof Our Lady of Grace. (D)
Day 2 / OCT 19. SAN GIOVANNI – MONT SANT’ANGELO – SAN GIOVANNI ROTONDO
After celebrating Holy Mass at the Church of Our Lady of Grace, we pay homage to the exhumed incorrupt body ofSt. Pio of Pietrelcina. Padre Pio bore the 5 wounds of Jesus for 50 years. Throngs of people were drawn to hisconfessional. He brought peace of mind, consolation and serenity to thousands. He had the gifts of healing,
bilocation and prophecy. His burial was attended by more than 100,000 people. People would line up at the churchentrance for 2 hours to attend his masses. He died at the age of 81. We continue to the hilltop Sanctuary of St.Michael the Archangel or Monte Sant’ Angelo, the oldest shrine in Western Europe dedicated to the Guardian Angel. Archangels are spiritual beings of the highest rank created by God before the beginning of the world. They have no material body. They are immortal. They are created and named for theirmission. St. Michael’s mission is to fight the evil spirits who seek the ruin of souls. Tradition states that in this placeSt. Michael fought the demon and threw it to the deep abyss down the cliff and the demon was seen no more. Thenatural cave in the middle of this mountain is now a revered cathedral by the townsfolk. (B,D)

Within these hallowed Cathedrals are relics of saints and of Jesus himself.
