Up until around the year 2000, the Alesis ADAT digital tape recorder was the most widespread, universal medium for exchanging laser shows. For example, was used for many years by the International Laser Display Association to judge and display shows for the annual ILDA Awards. It was popular because it was relatively inexpensive, and used widely available S-VHS videotape (or hard disk drives on the latest model) for recording. The major drawback, however, is that an unmodified ADAT can't directly record laser signals due to the inability to record DC. 

From early 1995 until around 2007, Pangolin manufactured a special board to modify the Alesis ADAT XT and XT-20 units. This board is called the CADA-MOD board, and it won a First Place ILDA Award for Technical Achievement in 1997.
