“Approximately 43% of the global population, especially the lower-income populace in the remote and rural parts of the developing world, is deprived of household safe piped water.” This means around 900 million people are without access to safe, clean drinking water and 1.5 million of those people are children who die from diarrheal diseases…which can be prevented with access to clean drinking water, sanitation, and hygiene education. Point-of-use (POU) treatment, treating the water at it’s immediate source, is an alternative approach. The LifeStraw and Family LifeStraw, produced by Vestergaard Frandsen, are prime examples of successful approaches to POU treatment. The LifeStraw is just that…a life-saving tool in the form of a large straw that filters water as people suck dirty water into it.
