80% Savings On Electricity with LED Street Lighting

 Jul 13, 2008 – Power for street lighting represents the largest single cost faced by local authority’s world wide.

New Technology has recently launched a range of street lights based on high power LED (light emitting diode) technology. The range offers a selection of LED mast head lamp units designed to replace existing sodium and metal halide street lamps, a simple LED light bulb that fits standard E40 bulb holders, a specially designed tunnel light for underground applications, and a solar powered street light system which is totally independent of mains power.

Switching to LED street lights offers up to 80% savings on power consumption and ensures a complete return on investment in less than 17 months with colossal savings over the 10 year life of the product. Resultant reductions in harmful Co2 and So2 emissions are proportional.

Comparison between a conventional 400W sodium HP lamp and an equivalent 168W high power LED lamp based on 12 hours usage per 24 hour period shows a saving of 12.25kWh (Sodium HP power daily consumption = 14.83kWh, 168W high power LED daily consumption = 2.58kWh)

At current Philippine average power costs this saving amounts to around PHP9,300 per lamp, per year. A saving of PHP930,000  per year per 100 lights in operation.

Conventional sodium HP or metal halide lamps have a life span of around one year requiring at least annual replacement and maintenance. High power LED lights require no regular maintenance further increasing savings on replacement bulbs, access equipment and labour costs. New installations benefit from a substantial reduction in the cost of expensive heavy duty cable required for sodium lighting.

The exceptional photometric properties of  high power LED street lights, in addition to offering a bright, natural light colour, provide a uniform rectangular beam pattern (40x16 meters at 12 meter height) that is 50% brighter and 50% larger than the oval beam pattern produced by a conventional lamp. This highly focused beam pattern allows LED lights to be spaced at much wider intervals than sodium lights increasing still further the savings achievable in initial investment requirement and operating costs.

LED has an unique colour index providing bright, true colours during nighttime hours.

Highly focused LED optical system provides a regular rectangular beam pattern with uniform brightness, reducing dark patches and light loss between light sources.
No glare or strobe effect
LED light sources do not produce glare or strobe effects common in conventional street lighting, reducing visual fatigue for drivers and pedestrians alike.
No dust absorption or yellowing
Because LED operates at low voltage and low temperature there is no reduction in brightness or yellowing, which is associated with traditional street lighting, over the life span of the LED
Instant start
Unlike sodium lights, LED lights do not require a time delay to reach optimum brightness levels.
