Mitsubishi DI-D Hyper Common Rail

Mitsubishi Motors Co. Ltd. is proud to announce it has developed a new type of diesel engine called the "Direct Injection-Diesel Hyper Common Rail" or DI-D Hyper Common Rail Engine. The newly developed 2.5-liter and 3.2-liter engines are equipped with direct-injection, common rail fuel delivery systems unlike the current Strada's diesel engines, which use indirect injection with a sub chamber.

The common rail system was adopted in that it offers significantly greater freedom and control over fuel injection. Engineered to be able to handle a maximum pressure of 180 MPa, the high-pressure common rail system enables precision control of the injection pressure, injection duration (injection amount), and injection schedule over a wide operating range. As a result, the system promises high output while achieving a reduction in exhaust gases, fuel consumption, and noise.

A turbocharger was added to the 2.5-liter engine and the displacement of one engine was increased to 3.2 liters to increase both maximum torque and maximum output. Further increases in power were achieved through a number of means. A DOHC 16-valve design was adopted, the injector nozzles were centrally positioned, and a cross flow design was created by locating the intake and exhaust manifolds on both sides of the engine to boost both breathing efficiency and combustion efficiency. Other measures include the use of roller rocker arms to reduce friction.

                  1946, MIZUSHIMA                    

In 1946, Mitsubishi began production of the Mizushima, 0.4 ton capacity three wheeler cargo transport featuring a folding top and windshield. The Mizushima was tough, reliable and economical, virtues which won it a strong and loyal following in those hard yet growing years. The first models produced were designed as small cargo transports but a few years later variations were expanded to include a light van, open wagon, trailer tractor and passenger models.

As an example, the TM3D produced between 1948 and 1950, featured an enclosed passenger cabin. This model was built in response to the public's request for a more passenger oriented model. Like the body variations, the cargo variations also grew from the original 0.5 ton to include 0.75 ton, 1.0 ton, 1.5 ton and 2.0 ton models. Mitsubishi continued to produce the popular Mizushima line until 1962 by which time more than 90,000 units were produced.

             1967, COLT PICK-UP                

Mitsubishi's entry into the field of pickups began in 1967 with the introduction of the Colt pickup.The bonnet-type Colt pickup was built on the Colt 1000F frame and had a payload capacity of 0.5 ton.

         1966, MITSUBISHI MINICAB            

In 1966, the Mitsubishi Minicab cab-over pickup truck was launched to replace the Mitsubishi 360. Powered by the same air cooled two-stroke 359 cc engine as the Minica, it came with cargo gates on three sides to simplify loading and unloading.

         1968, DELICA PICK-UP            

The production of the Delica, a light commercial cab-over pickup began in 1968. The Delica pickup with a payload of 0.6-ton had a top end speed of 115km/h adopting the 1,088cc, KE44 engine with a power output of 58ps.

                 1978, MITSUBISHI L200               

The one-ton pickup, Forte, launched as the Mitsubishi L200 in many overseas markets was introduced in 1970. At the time Mitsubishi felt that a more passenger oriented styling would have greater appeal to the buying public.
Since the Forte was to be developed for export markets, especially the U.S., rather than the Japanese market, Chrysler Motors, who in those days marketed Mitsubishi vehicles under its own name, was involved in the designing process. After much in depth research and development, the Forte was finally launched in 1978, eight long years from the design board to production, but eight years well spent. Sales in its first year reached 45,000 units and jumped dramatically to over 100,000 units the following year. The U.S. Market alone accounted for approximately 5,000 units per month.
Marketed as the D60 as well as the Plymouth Arrow Pickup by Chrysler in the U.S., its popularity skyrocketed and was voted the Pickup of the year in 1979 by Pickup, Van and 4WD magazine.

The Mitsubishi Strada is also beyond just good looks but also boasts of having the distinction of being the safest pick up in the market.   The Strada scored a respectable 4-stars out of 5 in the Adult Occupant Protection category of both the 2008 European New Car Assessment Program or the Euro NCAP and its Australian counterpart the ANCAP.   In this category, vehicles are tested to check if there is no passenger intrusion in the cabin after a frontal and side collision.

Mitsubishi’s exclusive Reinforced Impact Safety Evolution (RISE) body and frame system greatly enhanced the survivability of its occupants. The RISE frame incorporates front and rear crumple zones with reinforced beams to absorb collision force and direct it away from the vehicle’s interior. Aside from the RISE body, the Strada has dual-stage front SRS Airbags and seat belt pre-tensioners that react instantaneously in the event of a frontal collision and these greatly reduces the chance of passengers being slumped into the steering wheel or dashboard.

Accordingly, the Mitsubishi Strada also convincingly passed the Swedish ‘Moose or Elk’ test* wherein vehicles are subjected to do evasive maneuvers to determine if a vehicle has good stability. In the test, the Strada did not experience a hair raising moment balancing on 2 or even 3 wheels. This can be attributed to the suspension design and the low center of gravity of the Strada.

* The ‘Moose or Elk’ test have been used in Sweden for decades and popularized by the motor magazine Teknikens Värld.   The Moose test is done on dry wide pavement, wherein traffic cones are set up in an S shape to simulate the obstacle, the road and its edges.   When the driver comes onto the track, he quickly swerves into the oncoming lane to avoid the object and then immediately swerves back to avoid oncoming traffic. The test is repeated with an increased speed until the car skids down the cones or spins around. This usually happens at speeds of about 70-80 km/h (45-50 mph) in the best cases.
