The Science: Antioxidants & Free Radicals

An atom, the basic building block of everything including cells, consists of a nucleus with protons and neutrons, and pairs of electrons orbiting the electrically charged space. The behavior of the atom depends on the number of electrically charged particles. When, during a chemical reaction, an electron is pulled from one of the pairs of electrons of an oxygen molecule, that oxygen molecule with an unpaired electron becomes a free radical. This is so because it must seek out another electron to make a new pair, and may cause damage by pulling an electron from an otherwise normal cell of your body. That's not all. The newly damaged molecule is now itself left with an unpaired electron and must scavenge an electron in what has now become a "cascade" of free-radical damage.

By the year 2050, nearly one-third of the U.S. population is expected to be over age 65. In TCM terms, wolfberries are sweet in taste and neutral in nature; they act on the liver, lung, and kidney channels and enrich yin. Acetyl L-Tyrosine is a special Tyrosine chemical complex that research indicates that it crosses the blood brain rapidly. Acetyl L-Tyrosine helps to elevate catecholamine neurotransmitters that balance chemicals in the brain associated with depression, stress, mood swings, and drug withdrawals. Due to its role as a precursor to norepinephrine and epinephrine (two of the body’s main stress-related hormones) tyrosine may also ease the adverse effects of environmental, psychosocial, and physical stress. L-tyrosine is also converted by skin cells into melanin (the dark pigment that protects against the harmful effects of ultraviolet light) and is a component in the structure of our Thyroid hormones.

Taurine: Taurine is another conditionally essential amino acid found in high concentrations in the white blood cells, skeletal muscles, central nervous system as well as the heart muscles. In adults, this nutrient can be manufactured from methionine in the body and from cysteine in the liver, but vitamin B6 must be present .It is a key ingredient of bile, which in turn is needed for fat digestion, absorption of fat-soluble vitamins as well as the control of cholesterol serum levels in the body. This nutrient is used in the proper use of potassium, calcium as well as sodium in the body, and for maintaining cell membrane integrity. Studies have shown benefits of Taurine include: lowering blood pressure and is an antioxidant that helps reinforce the immune system.

B VITAMINS
Riboflavin (Vitamin B2) is important in the breakdown of carbohydrates, fats and proteins, and, acts as a coenzyme in the process. In addition to producing energy for the body, riboflavin also works as an antioxidant. It is also significant in the maintenance of the skin and mucous membranes, the cornea of the eye and for nerve sheaths. As a water-soluble vitamin, any excess is excreted, although small amounts are stored in the liver and kidney.

Niacin (Vitamin B3), is needed for the metabolism of food into usable energy, the maintenance of healthy skin, nerves and the gastrointestinal tract. It is also used to synthesize starch that can be stored in the body’s muscles and liver for eventual use as an energy source.

Pyridoxine (Vitamin B6) B6 is needed for more than 100 enzymes involved in protein metabolism. It is also essential for red blood cell metabolism. The nervous and immune systems need Vitamin B-6 to function efficiently, and it is also needed for the conversion of tryptophan (an amino acid) to niacin (a vitamin).

Cyanocobalamin (B12) Vitamin B12 is necessary for processing carbohydrates, proteins and fats and to help make all of the blood cells in our bodies. Vitamin B12 is also required for maintenance of our nerve sheaths. Vitamin B12 acts as a coenzyme in the synthesis and repair of DNA, the genetic material in all cells.
