No i dont think so, penalosa was stopped by lopez, nietes almost lost in his last fight, concepcion and mayol lost their last fight, bautista, gorres and banal could not win against top caliber opponents. mark meligen is super slow like a heavyweight. and most of you mentioned are just regional champs. sila donaire, viloria and marvin sonsona lang ang tingin ko pang world class. the rest pang asian lang sad to say. well sana makabawi sila. hehe
oh com'on sir...sa dami ng boxers na kilala at nabanggit mo eh... kelan ba nangyari na ganito kadaming Pinoy boxers ang nagkaroon ng championship chance sa loob ng isang dekada? not even in the times of Flash Elorde, Rolando Navarete or Luisito Espinosa right? and we're having the best P4P boxer in the planet plus a Pinay boxing champ that never happened before. all first for the Phillipines.
so as for me, yes, indeed we are the golden age of boxing.
Magandang topic ito. Both of you gentlemen raised very nice points. And if I may add may 2 cents worth.
It's hard to compare eras. The argument that this is the first time that we have this many champions in our midst could be countered by the fact that in the past there were only 3 legitimate boxing governing bodies, WBC, WBA and IBF and the weight categories in the past were only the basics. Regional Titles don't carry that much weight and was considered as mere stepping stone for aspiring boxers. In the past, merely breaking into the top 5 ranking of each weight division is already considered an accomplishment. There we're no Female boxers then either.
But for 2 Filipinos to be rated as the best pound for pound boxer trumphs all posible argument. Manny Pacquaio is the P4P King while Nonito Donaire is rated up there with the best of them. With this accomplishment alone I can say that this is indeed arguably the Golden Age of Boxing for the Philippines.
