| Perform Check Disk: originally posted by networm Click Start Click Run Type In cmd A command prompt will open type in the command prompt c:\> chkdsk c: /F /R /X Press Enter It will ask you to re-schedule the check next boot as the system drive is locked. Press "Y" Reboot PC Let the chekdisk run in 5 stages Wait for it to finish. If you have Drive D: ..to the same procedure as drive C: above. Kung ayaw mag-check... Run fsutil try nyo muna yan,,,medyo ibang procedure na ang "fsutil" A Simple Guide to know why your PC crash.. The most common reason for a computer crash is known as hardware conflict. Hardware conflict occurs when two pieces of hardware-a keyboard and mouse, for example-share the same interrupt request channel (IRQ). If you have a number of devices attached to your computer, the probability of a pair of them not being installed correctly increases and can cause two of them to share an IRQ, and when this happens your computer can crash. The simplest way to avoid this is by checking the IRQ's being utilized at a given moment, and then re-installing any device that is using a repeated IRQ. Bad Ram Random Access Memory or RAM problems could be causing your computer to crash. The error typically displayed when RAM is the problem is fatal exception error. A fatal error can mean there is a serious hardware problem, but sometimes it is simply a RAM problem caused by mismatched RAM chips. By mixing RAM chips of different speeds, your computer will be forced to run them all at a lower speed and can hence cause a crash. You can avoid this problem by making sure all the RAM chips installed within your computer are the same speed, or by increasing the wait state of the RAM within the BIOS settings on your computer. BIOS Settings All motherboards are supplied with a given range of chipset settings by the manufacturer. Sometimes these settings can be a common culprit for computer crashes. In order to access the chipset settings, you usually need to press F2 or delete during the first few seconds of booting up your computer. Once you are looking at the BIOS, a few things that could be causing your computer to freeze are CAS latency discrepancies where the latency does not match the RAM, which you are using. Older RAM uses a latency of 3 while newer SDRAM uses a latency of 2. Another thing, which can be adjusted within the BIOS, is the IRQ settings. Hard Disk Drives After a few weeks of use, the information on your hard drive begins to become fragmented. It is an excellent idea to defragment your hard drive every week or so to keep your computer running smooth and fast. Fatal VXD Errors and OE Exceptions Fatal VXD Errors and OE Exceptions are typically caused by video card problems. These can usually be fixed quite easily by reducing the resolution of the video display. Viruses Obviously, viruses can cause many problems other than simply running malicious code on your computer. The instability caused by viruses lurking in the background of your system is a common cause of crashes. The easiest way to deal with these is by scanning anything you download onto your hard disk, and by performing regular virus scanning and quarantine. Printers Sending a document to be printed creates a bigger file, referred to as a postscript file. Since the printer only has a small amount of memory, it is easy for it to become overloaded when you are attempting to print a large document and can cause your computer to crash. It is a good idea to turn off the printer for ten seconds and turn it back on if you suspect printer overload. Software Another cause of computer crashes is software that has been installed improperly. The easiest way to fix this problem when you suspect software malfunction is by completely removing the suspect software, then re-installing it. Overheating All central processing units or CPU's generate a lot of heat and are fitted with factory installed cooling apparatus. When the CPU overheats, it causes a crash, which is known as a kernel error. A great investment to remedy this problem is an after market cooling system, or larger fan. Power Supply Problems The final problem, which could be causing your computer to crash, is the power supply. An interrupted power supply or surge can wreak havoc on your system. A good idea is investing in an uninterrupted power supply. Simple Ways to Make Your PC Faster.. If your pc is running slowly you would know how frustrating it can sometimes be especially if you do not know what you can do to make it run faster or what you have tried to do did not work. There are several ways to make your system run faster and this article would show you some of them. The first way to do this is to delete things on your computer which you no longer need or which you are no longer using and some examples of things you can delete include things like old files, software and programs on your pc. The reason why this helps is that helps to free up disk space on your computer and can help make it run faster. You can also make your system work better by deleting your internet temporary files and cookies and by emptying your recycle bin on a regularly basis to help free up more disk space on your computer. Another good way to do this is to make sure you do not have too much programs running on your system at the same time. If you have a lot of programs running at the same time it can affect the speed of your pc, so only leave programs that you know you need at that moment and try not to do too many different things at the same time. You can also help to improve the performance of your computer by reducing the amount of programs that start up with your computer as these programs usually put a lot of pressure on your computer and can affect its performance. Some people usually have things like their instant messaging service start up with their computer and these programs can affect the speed of your computer. Remove Antivirus 2009 the Easy Way - Use What You Already Have.. Some of the sites you may visit for help with removing Antivirus 2009 may benefit from the widespread distribution of this malware by selling software to get rid of it. I don't mean to say that this is altogether terrible, for they are providing a service. I do mean to say that it is possible that you may not need additional software to remove Antivirus 2009 from your computer. (You'll be able to find out in just a moment.) That being said, you should also realize that if you had kept your security software up to date, your computer probably wouldn't be infected with Antivirus 2009 in the first place. Knowing how to remove Antivirus 2009 doesn't mean your computer is protected from it either. The most important thing for you to realize is that Antivirus 2009 (or any of its variations) is NOT Windows Software and it is NOT Antivirus Software. It is a rogue anti-spyware that pretends to want to help you rid your system of infections. These are not real infections and Antivirus 2009 can't clean a real infection if you really do have one! This malware is designed to scare you into paying for a bogus cure for a phony infection. You should never buy anything that you haven't researched or without a recommendation from a trusted source. How To Remove Antivirus 2009 I have been successful in removing Antivirus 2009 (or instructing others to) by using this method. It's easy enough for just about anyone to do and it does work. I'm sure there are situations that it won't work, but it will work in many cases. The System Restore Utility is intended to undo changes to your system that have made it unstable. It can also be an effective means of restoring your computer to a point in time that it didn't have Antivirus 2009 on it. To remove Antivirus 2009, try restoring your system to an earlier date that you think you didn't have Antivirus 2009 on it, then run a full virus scan and spyware scan with current virus and spyware definitions. To run system restore: * Click your Start button. * Mouse over All Programs, Accessories, System Tools. * Click System Restore. * Click 'Restore my computer to an earlier time'. * Click 'Next'. Select one of the Boldface Dates. * Click 'Next'. Reboot you computer when prompted and run your (current) antivirus and antispyware softwares. Installing Windows XP Make sure all your valuable data is backed up to a burned CD a separate disk or another PC. If you are confident that you can safely lose EVERY PIECE OF DATA on this computer and you have backed up any data of any value to a totally separate box or media. Let's continue. Insert the Windows XP CD into your CD ROM and then select to restart from the start menu. This will shut your computer down and then restart it. Your computer will start to power up and at some point I am hoping the system will say: "Press any key to boot from CD." If your system does say this, press any key and XP will take over. If it doesn’t we need to get your bios changed so it will boot from the CD. The instructions below will give you a “Dangerously Vague” idea of how to do this. If you go into the bios and none of this makes sense please let me know and I will do my best to help you (NOTE: You have not changed your system at all so you should still be able to reach the message boards here at CP at this point.). If your machine will not boot from the CD then it will boot back into your current install and we need to restart again. - STEPS FOR MAKING BIOS BOOT FROM CD: In the next restart process we are looking for a message that says, "To enter bios press the "Delete" key or "F2" or maybe some other key. If prompted please press the key specified on the screen." Now we are in the BIOS we are looking for a setting that says, 'Boot' or 'Boot Sequence' or 'Boot Order' look under the various menu options in your bios screen. At the bottom of your screen there should be instructions for navigating the bios and making changes. Just follow them. Find the setting for the boot order and make sure that CDROM is first not your hard drive 'C:' or your floppy drive 'A:' we want the CDROM to be listed first. Save changes and exit. Probably by pressing the F10 key but look around for instructions that tell you how to do this. They will be somewhere on the screen. When you save and exit your computer will reboot. This time it will or should display the "Press any key to boot from CD" if it doesn't then it's time to post a message to the Message Boards described above. After you "Press any key" Windows will take a bit to copy some files to a reserved area of your hard drive. Then a screen will show up with 3 options. 1. To setup Windows XP now press enter. 2. To repair an existing installation press R. 3. To quit the installation and return to Windows press ESC. So at this time you want to press [ENTER]. Now you see a license agreement, please press F8 once. It will now search for a previous version of windows and it will find your current install and show you where that is. You will be given 2 options. 1. To repair Windows XP press R. 2. To continue with fresh installation of Windows XP press ESC. Please press the [ESC] key. Now you have 3 more options. 1. To set up Windows XP on the selected item press ENTER. 2. To create a partition in the un-partitioned space press C. 3. To delete the selected partition, press D. Please press the [d] key. Now we have two more options: 1. To delete this partition, press ENTER. 2. To go back ... press ESC. Please press the [ENTER] key. We want to delete this partition. Again, we have two more options: 1. To delete this partition, press L. 2. To return to previous ... , press ESC. Please press the [l] key. This confirms our desire to delete the partition. Now you are back in a screen that shows some junk and has the following text highlighted "Unpartitioned Space ##### MB". Down at the bottom you will notice ENTER = Install and C = Create Partition. Please press "C" now as we need to create a new partition on the hard disc. In the next screen you have two more options: 1. To create new partition, enter a size and press ENTER. 2. To go back to previous ... press ESC. Please don't change the numbers unless you know what you’re doing, just press the [ENTER] key. Now we are back in a familiar screen with 3 familiar options: 1. To set up Windows XP on selected item, press ENTER. 2. To create a partition ... press C. 3. To delete ... press D. Please press the [ENTER] key. It is now going to prompt us to format the partition. By default the following text will be highlighted, "Format the partition using NTFS files system." This is the one we want to use, (We don't want QUICK). So hit the [ENTER] key. Now you will see the screen that shows your disc being formatted and it will show a progress bar and all that. Just sit and wait... and wait... and wait... Could take like 20 minutes.... Once the format is done XP goes into what it calls (for the most part) an unattended install. It will automatically copy files and then it will automatically restart your system. Next time it comes up you will be back in Windows land with 5 progress indicators on the left side of the screen. Watch them closely they cue you to what is happening. The first screen that prompts you for information is your "Regional and Language Options" Just click 'Next' here unless you are a non English speaking person. In the next screen please enter your full name, and use your real name here. If you have a business name put it in the Organization field if you don't leave it blank and hit next. Now you are going to be asked for the Windows XP Professional product key. Your Key is: # # # # # - # # # # # - # # # # # - # # # # # - # # # # # Once you have entered your product key please press next. Now you are asked for a computer name. You can use whatever you want. Now enter the administrator password and be sure you write it down. Please click next. Now select your date & time stuff, pretty easy to do, click next. Now it is doing more stuff, it claims to be installing networking. The next screen shown prompts you for your network settings. Here you want to take the "Typical Settings" and click next. Now it asks you for a workgroup or computer domain. Just take the defaults and click next. Okay, your computer should have done stuff for a bit...Then your system will have rebooted. Now we get to do Microsoft’s Windows XP Welcome Screen... Just click the Next in the lower right hand corner. Now it checks for your internet if you don't have one it asks you, "How will this computer connect?" Please check the first option "Digital Subscriber line (DSL)..." Click next in the lower right corner. Now it says, "Do you use a username and password?" to connect to the internet. No you don't, so you will select "No, always connected." Please click next. Now it asks you to set up your high speed connection. Check "Obtain IP Automatically". Check "Obtain DNS Automatically". Click next. Now it wants you to register. Register if you wish but it is not required I never register my systems.. Now it asks you for your name and it gives you room to enter 3 others, this is misleading. It will use whatever name you put in there as your username. So my name is Rex Winn, if I put that in there every time I log in that is what I use. Please do not use spaces in your username. Here I would put "rawinn" for my name as it is ‘r’ for first name ‘a’ for middle initial and ‘winn’ for last name. That is purely my preference. Enter in whatever you like and click next. All done, now click "Finish". Congratulations, you have just installed Windows XP. Take a breather, have a drink and then read my recommendations and further on let’s install DirecWay. RECOMMENDATIONS: Okay, so now you are looking at a nice pretty desktop. Microsoft elects to block a lot of stuff from you so here is what I would do if I was you. Customize The Desktop 1. Right Mouse Click on the desktop and select “Properties”. Click on the “Desktop” tab set Background to "none". 2. Then a little farther down on the "Desktop" tab there is a button "Customize Desktop" click it. 3. In Desktop Icons select "My Computer" and anything else you want. 4. Uncheck, "Run Desktop Cleanup every 60 days." 5. Then click the "Screen Saver" set screen saver to none. 6. Click the “Power” button (below the screen saver drop down). 7. Make sure that all power management settings are set to "NEVER". 8. Click the "Apply" button. Now if you want to change your resolution click on "Settings" and move the slider. You will see a few prompts answer accordingly. Then click “Okay”. Your screen might flicker and it might ask you if you want to keep your changes with a little timer showing. Please click yes. If you don't see anything but a black screen, wait 30 seconds and the desktop will restore. Change your resolution a tad by sliding the slider in the "Settings" tab to the left a click or two and try again. Repeat until you don't have a black screen for 15 seconds. Set A Password 1. Now go to the "Control Panel" and double-click "User Accounts". 2. You will see a link to "Change the way users log on or off". 3. Click that link and uncheck "Use Welcome Screen". 4. Click Okay. 5. Now click your username and click Change/Assign password. 6. Enter in a password. Do yourself a favor and include a hint. 7. Click Okay. 8. Now close the User Accounts Window. 9. Close the control panel. Enable Remote Desktop 1. Now right mouse click the "My Computer" icon and select "Properties". 2. Click the "Remote" tab. 3. Put a Check next to "Allow users to connect remotely to this computer." 4. Then click the "Learn more about Remote Desktop" link and read up. Remote Desktop is totally awesome!!! 5. Click the Okay button and the window should close. Set Folder View Options in Windows Explorer 1. Now, right mouse click the "My Computer" icon on your desktop and select "Explore". 2. In the new window click the "Tools" menu. 3. Select "Folder Options". 4. Now click the "View" tab. Put a check next to the following: A. Display the contents of system folders. B. Display the full path in the title bar. C. Show hidden files and folders. D. Show Control Panel in My Computer. Uncheck the following: A. Hide file extensions for known file types. B. Hide protected operating system files. A dialog will say are you sure, YES you are. C. Use Simple File Sharing. D. Please click “Okay” and then you can close explorer. Configure Power Managment Settings For USB 1. Now on the desktop right click the "My Computer" icon and select "Manage". 2. In the new window select "Device Manager" in the tree view. 3. Expand the Universal Serial Bus Controllers. A. Select each USB Root hub double-click or right click and select “Properties”. B. Click "Power Management". C. Uncheck "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power”. D. Click Okay. DO THIS FOR EACH ROOT HUB. Configure Power Management for Network Adapters 1. Now expand the "Network Adapters" double-click all listed adapters and disable the windows XP power management on each of them. 2. Close the "Computer Management" window. Points Of Interest The only thing to point out here is that a lot of systems default by putting hard drives to sleep and systems in stand-bye. This drives me insane as I remotely connect to machines all the time. You cannot get a connection though if good old XP put your system to sleep. So if you right click the desktop and view properties check out the Power Management under the screen saver tab. Change the options how you like them and be done with it. Please note this is where laptop users can change what their laptop does when the lid is closed. I always set mine to nothing because I hate bringing it out of stand-bye every time I walk across the room. In a similar vein some companies like Toshiba make you change these settings through their own custom applet in the Windows Control Panel. So if you find the above doesn't work look for a costom power manager in the control panel. History August 21st, 2006. First release. Blue Screen Error: For non techy people that need a solution because they have a "Blue Screen Error" crash that happens whenever you do the following: 1) Loading Microsoft Applications 2) Playing Games 3) Using a Tally software 4) You moved your mouse This error that you have is the Blue Screen of Death aka BSOD, where the computer screen turns blue, and asks if you have installed any new hardware or software and informs that you need to reboot your computer to fix this error. Here are a few things that can help you fix the blue screen error. 1)Registry Cleaner software I prefer to use software and fix any errors before deciding what else to do. Reason for this is that going into hardware is little difficult. Opening up the case, changing ram etc. Sometimes when we install multiple programs or delete programs, this can cause the computer to run very slow. The software runs a scan on your harddisk and clears out errors that are giving your problems. 2) Change the Ram Changing Ram is little inconvenient. You'll need to check it the rams at fault. If its a DIY computer and you have 2 sticks of RAM, remove one and see if the problem comes back. Or download Ram checking software to test if the ram is faulty. If you're using Dell or HP, they should have tech support and their own software inbuilt to test the RAM functionality. So just call them for help. 3) In rare cases, both the above don't solve the Blue Screen problem, then the problem could like with the power supply. How To Take Good Care Of Your Hard Disks: INFO on how can you prevent HDD's from bad sectors/clusters..and How To Take Good Care Of Your Hard Disks .. all newly manufactured disks actually have bad sectors on them! this is a consequence of the manufacturing technology and tolerances inherent in them. the factory does a low level scan and 'formats' it by putting the needed entries inthe BPB to lock out these physical imperfections. logically, avoidance of shock is the best way to ensure data integrity. of course, a disk should never be moved when powered on. careful handling and proper mounting are key. operationally, airflow and keeping the airhole open (that little dimple amrked 'do not cover' on your new hard disk) are all taht are really needed. afaik, only the wdc raptor 10ks require active cooling, but that is more to prevent thermal build-up inside your case. and of course, register your drive online with the original manufacturer. i have found that wdc and hitchi go out of heir way to help the end-user even when your local dealer has abandoned you. some new hitachi drives have active protection - their electronics can detect if they are falling and automatically lock the heads to prevent data loss. try to get some of these new drives if you can - they are appearing first in the new deskstar notebook hdds.. 1. Do not make "umpog" your hard disk at all. Siempre kasama na rito yung nababagsak yung HDD. The HDD may be mostly made of metal but you have to handle them like eggs; 2. If you don?t want bad sectors, never move your PC while it is on. Kahit na 2 inches lang ang iuurong. Never NEVER. Ito ang palagay kong exception to the rule ?Never say Never?. Shutdown. Shutoff. Move the PC. Then turn it on. 3. Do not make "patung-patong" your HDD, one on top of the other. Make sure they are in proper packaging (anti-static bags and clamshells or styro boxes) if you have to store them; 4. Only hold or handle your HDDs by their edges, never touch the printed circuit boards or electronic parts; 5. If you have to put the HDD down on, lay it down on an anti-static bag 6. When mounting HDDs use the proper screws (coarse thread and shorter screw) as opposed to the screws for CDROM drives and Floppy Drives which are fine thread, and the case screws which are coarse thread but longer; 7. Use as many screws to mount your HDD as possible, usually 4. Some techs will use only 3, I have seen HDDs mounted using only 1 (@&$%) screw. Why? the 4 screws will ensure proper heat transfer from the HDD to the case; 8. Tighten but not overtighten the screws. Your screws are steel, the HDD case is aluminum, you are in danger or damaging the thread in your HDD if you overtighten; 9. You may mount the HDD in any way (level, un-level, upwards, downwards, vertical) whatever it takes to make it fit your casing. There will be no problem performance-wise. But, mind you, if in the future say 2 years, you have to unmount and reinstall the HDD in a configuration different to what it has been accustomed to, the HDD might die on you just like that. Example ? vertically mounted for 2 years, then i-reinstall mo horizontally. Maaring pag-on mo pa lang ng PC, dedo na ang HDD. It happened to me 3X already. Perfectly working HDD, then remounted in a different attitude, patay. Most probably the bearings have gotten used to the old mounting and seize up when mounted differently. 10. Keep your HDDs cool. Blow fans on them, use coolers. At the very least make sure your casing is properly ventilated. Heat shortens the life of HDDs. 11. Cables? Make sure your cables are good and connected correctly. I have had bad cables (may gasgas or may kagat kagat ng daga o ipis) kill HDDs one after the other. Lungkot. Akala ko sira hard disk yun pala cable, kinabitan ko ng ibang HDD, patay din. 12. Power Supply? Make sure your power supply is up to snuff (ibig sabihin maganda ang boltahe). This is where most HDDs fail after serving you for a long time. Low 12-volt rails kill HDD motors. Bad 5V kill HDD electronics. 13. Power connectors. Make sure your power connectors (those white plugs with yellow, black and red wires) fit well. Loose connectors provide bad power. After running your PC for a while, say 15-30 minutes, touch your connectors, if they are hot, then there?s something loose, replace with a spare connector and label the bad connector. If you do system checkups, it is good to take note of heat discoloration on power connectors and replace those bad ones; 14. Brown outs do not just kill lights, they kill HDDs. Brown outs are sometimes accompanied by bad power spikes and deadly voltage fluctuations. If you can afford a good UPS, buy one. 15. When transferring HDDs between systems don?t just take one and install into another and fire it up just like that. Please make sure you get into BIOS first and make sure that your new system is set to ?auto?. If your old system detected the HDD using manual or non-standard parameters, then duplicate the parameters first in BIOS in the new system before booting up. You might scramble all your data if your new system tries to read the HDD using wrong parameters. 16. If you use your PC a lot, defrag your partitions once a month. If not, a defrag once every 3 months will be fine. For those of you who think that defragmention speeds up your HDDs death, may I give a small explanation. If your partition is quite defragmented, your HDD will be doing a lot of unnecessary work by default, its head going back and forth trying to get to the different parts of your files scattered all over your disk. Besides with a defragmented disk, you will have a more responsive PC. 17. Install enough RAM. You don?t want your HDD swapping files back and forth from system RAM and the swap file. Lots of work for the HDD, slow PC. 18, Partition your HDD. At least 2 partitions. One partition for your Operating System. The other one for your data. This way if your OS gets corrupted (and it happens) you don?t have to perform PC acrobatics to get your data back. You can reformat your OS partition and be assured that your data is safe in a separate partition. Step-by-step on how to Connect two PC's via Cable: This describes the proccedure to connect a PC with a laptop, which enablesa user to use Remote desktop feature and internet connection on both computers. Schematics: PC ---------------------------- LAPTOP -> wireless connection to internet cross-over cable Configuring LAPTOP: 1. Go to Control Panel -> Network connections 2. Right-click on Wireless network connection and select Properties 3. Select Advanced tab and put a thick in the box "Allow other network users to connect to this computer's Internet connection" (You can also put a thick in the other box if you wish) 4. Confirm with the OK button and find yourself back in the Network connections window 5. Next, in Network connections Right-click on your LAN adapter, under General tab select Internet protocol (TCP/IP) and click Properties 6. Assign IP manually (192.168.0.1 - this is also the default if you use Network connection Wizard) and Subnet mask (255.255.255.0 - also default) 7. Next you must assing (one or) both DNS servers (I used the one ISP provided) - the most important thing to do is to use the same DNS when you configure the other computer!!! 8. Confirm everything and this computer is done... Configuring PC (if you don't want to set-up Remote desktop, where PC is the host computer, start at 4.): 1. Go to Control Panel -> System -> Remote tab 2. Put a thick in the "Allow users to connect remotely to this computer" 3. Confirm with OK 4. Go to Control Panel -> Network connections 5. Right-click on your LAN adapter, under General tab select Internet protocol (TCP/IP) and click Properties 6. Assign IP manually (for example 192.168.0.2 - has to be in the same range as the IP on the other computer, but different!) and Subnet mask (the same as on the other computer - 255.255.255.0) 7. Assign Default Gateway (which is the assigned IP of the other computer, in this case 192.168.0.1) 8. Assign the same DNS as on the first computer 9. Confirm everything... Everything should work now. Remember you have to use CROSS-OVER CABLE. If you are having problems with the connections try "playing" with the Firewall settings (under Exceptions and Advanced tab).
