Chery Philippines To Start Local Assembly Of Vehicles In September
Chery Motors Philippines may have just taken over the exclusive distributorship of the Chinese-made vehicles from Chery Iseway but it's making sure that it hits the ground running by starting the local assembly of some of its models in Sta. Rosa, Laguna, later this year.
By tapping the services of Star Motor Manufacturing Industries, Chery Philippines hopes to start churning out the QQ city car and the Q-series of small vans and pickup trucksfor the local market by September, Chery Philippines sales and marketing manager Raymond Tribdino said. Star Motor is in the business of contract vehicle assembly for the local market through its compact but modern assembly plant located in a six-hectare property inside the Laguna Technopark in Sta. Rosa.
Despite subcontracting the assembly of its vehicles to Star Motor, Chery Philippines is still looking to establish its own assembly plant in the country. According to Tribdino, the company has narrowed its choices down to three locations.
"We're looking at Cebu because the Visayas and Mindanao regions are some of Chery's strongest local markets," Tribdino said. "We're also looking at Pangasinan but the one location we're looking at intently is Port Irene in Cagayan."
Tribdino explained that officials from the Board of Investments and the Department of Trade and Industry are eagerly pushing Port Irene as the location for the assembly plant because, "it's a free port zone, in terms of nautical miles it's the closest to China so shipping costs would be much lower and the people in the area are already adept at handling cars off of container vans."
