MANILA, Philippines — House leaders said Monday that the passage of the “Filipino-style” divorce bill will not happen in the 15th Congress. Speaker Feliciano “Sonny” Belmonte Jr. and House Majority Leader and Mandaluyong City Rep. Neptali “Boyet” Gonzales II said that while the House leadership moved for the termination of the debates on the highly-divisive Reproductive Health (RH) bill, it is not keen on approving House Bill 1799 or “An Act Introducing Divorce in the Philippines.”

“We will attempt to finish the debates on RH bill. But I don’t think we can pass the divorce measure,” Belmonte said.

Gonzales said if the House would push for the two bills which are opposed by the Catholic Church and a number of lawmakers, their move might be perceived as a “declaration of war” against the Catholic Church.

“Divorce bill will not be passed this 15th Congress, not now. If we move for its approval along with the RH measure, parang nagdedeklara kami ng giyera sa Catholic Church,” he said.

But Gabriela party-list Rep. Luzviminda Ilagan, who authored HB 1799 along with Gabriela Rep. Emerenciana de Jesus, said they would continue to campaign for the bill to have it approved, citing her readiness to re-file the measure, which is still pending in the House Committee on Revision of Laws. “Let us not keep our country in the dark ages. I appeal to my colleagues in Congress to let the legislative mill run its course on the divorce bill without further delay and give Filipino couples in irreparable and unhappy marriages this option,” said said.

Hahaha! I find it highly ironic that the proponents of divorce are women and the lawmakers who don't want it discussed even are men.

mas importante kasi sa mga lawmakers natin ang brownie points.

pulitika ang dahilan. none of them doesnt want to be known to favour the divorce issue. mababawasan sila ng boto, knowing na tayong mga Pilipino generally are not in favor of it.

tapalan na lang ng pera ang politicians most likely they will be able to change their decision.

..thanks kasulit..

Let’s face it, the Philippines government isn’t at all concerned about the “sanctity” of marriage! they just want the money that annulment generates.

When a Filipino male beats his wife and abuses her and the children, threatens them with grave bodily harm, has sex with a women outside of the marriage covenant, then it’s simply and absolutely time for the woman to divorce the monster!
Don’t let this so-called family code there, fool you into thinking otherwise.

Marriage is an institute beautifully created by God in Heaven, to be between “one man” and “one woman”. God doesn’t like divorce, but He said to Moses, that if the Husband or Wife shall commit adultery, they should be given a writing of divorcement.

Understand that the catholic church there receive ” kick-backs” from the revenue gained from people paying for expensive annulments! They’re not wanting to give that money up! That’s the reason for their opposition to divorce! If the catholic church were really so concerned about morals and values contained in God’s Holy Word, they would look at “adultery” more closely, and get off of their high-horse about upholding the sanctity!

There can only be true sanctity of marriage, when two people are truly committed to one another, and retain their vows of forsaking all others.

That means that you only have sexual intercourse with the person you’re married to. It’s that simple! If the Husband or the Wife has sex with anyone else, then that completely dissolves the “Sanctity” of marriage. Adultery destroys the sanctity!
Divorce IS the answer to this overwhelming, and ridiculous problem in the Philippines.
When someone in a governmental capacity, has the moral backbone to step up to the plate and say we as Filipinos deserve this change, the Philippines will have a new breathe of life! Someone in that capacity of lawmakers has to stand up boldly. Let go of that old tradition of the self-righteous catholic church has tried to instill, and brainwash people to think.

Put your faith in Almighty God and His Son Jesus The Christ!
No more going to a confession and telling some man what’s going on with you.
Pray directly to the Son Of God Jesus Christ. Pray for the divorce bill in the Philippines!
