| the most effective way of learning the language is to practice it frequently :) join the forums here and little by little, try to express your thoughts in 'tagalog'... eventually you'll get used to it :) welcome to the philippines, sir :) |

| If you're that serious maybe you could hire a Filipino tutor coz it will take much longer to learn just by the software. If he/she can't teach you personally then maybe online? Material aids may be Tagalog films, soap operas, comics, songs or what have we. It's nice to know somebody from another land to actually find interest about the Philippines and its language. Welcome! |

| @yellowcupcake - yeah it's all too easy for me to reply here in English, so I should try and practise in Tagalog without sounding weird :) thanks for your reply Sir/Ma'am!
@great2find - I was thinking of maybe trying that as I've seen adverts here on Sulit of people looking for English teachers. At the moment I have to sit through Pinoy Big Brother, Vice Ganda and Kris TV, not so good, although I do pick up on a few words. I will pick up the Filipino diyaryo tomorrow as well! Yeah, I love it there, especially miss the adobo. Salamat Po! |

Argnanisaldua Elite Sulitizen 564 posts | Hi mike - welcome to our country - as we say "Mabuhay" - also thanks for your positive post regarding the 20 reasons thread of avanikolai - My german friend long ago practiced her tagalog by reading tagalog comic books. Since they came with ilustrations it was easier for her. - you can actually search the internet. there are some posted like - "Darna" - try buying a basic picture book at "National Bookstore" that has the tagalog and english word printed. Since as you said you can pick up the conversation from the familiar words you know. - And dont' worry about not being able to form correct tagalog sentence structures for now. Here in the Philippines we actually think that sounds cute. sort of like a british "Taglish" - Were honored that you are exerting efforts to learn proper tagalog. - Don't worry you'll pick up on the language soon enough. - enjoy the warm weather, It's going to get a lot warmer. |

| Salamat! Happy to be there for as long as I'm welcome.
I really appreciate the ideas, it's all stuff I haven't thought of. Although I did see Darna, that finished ages ago :p
I will probably need to source this material from the internet as I'm in England at the moment, so thanks for making me jealous of missing the summer there :)
By the way, I have noticed the Filipinos mixing English into their speech, and heard it was a way of being more comfortable using and practising English, but it doesn't really work the other way round? |

| That's what we call Taglish or a mixture of Tagalog and English.... actually schools don't really encourage that. You just mentioned you are following Vice Ganda.... just don't confuse using the gay lingo she will be using sometimes. Better yet, watch Eat Bulaga if available in your area.... watch out for their mainstays Jose Manalo, Joey De Leon... but don't listen to Jimmy Santos because of his carabao English Mabuhay ka |

Just Googled Carabao English, haha, I guess you could say I have Carabao Tagalog then, or worse!
