I thought of creating this topic for myself and for everybody else who might also be interested in sparing a little time to feed their souls.

June 17, 2012

Mark 4: 26 - 34
26 And he said, "The kingdom of God is as if a man should scatter seed upon the ground,
27 and should sleep and rise night and day, and the seed should sprout and grow, he knows not how.
28 The earth produces of itself, first the blade, then the ear, then the full grain in the ear.
29 But when the grain is ripe, at once he puts in the sickle, because the harvest has come."
30 And he said, "With what can we compare the kingdom of God, or what parable shall we use for it?
31 It is like a grain of mustard seed, which, when sown upon the ground, is the smallest of all the seeds on earth;
32 yet when it is sown it grows up and becomes the greatest of all shrubs, and puts forth large branches, so that the birds of the air can make nests in its shade."
33 With many such parables he spoke the word to them, as they were able to hear it;
34 he did not speak to them without a parable, but privately to his own disciples he explained everything.

God will not hear our prayers unless we acknowledge ourselves to be sinners. We do this when we ponder on our own sins alone, and not on those of our neighbor.  -- St. Moses the Ethiopian

"For therefore we both labour and suffer reproach, because we trust in the living God, who is the Saviour of ALL MEN [vessels of dishonour], especially [now] of those that believe [the vessels of honour]" (I Tim. 4:10).

A time for everything

1 To every thing there is a season, and a ver. 17;ch. 8:6time to every purpose under the heaven:

2 A time [a]to be born, and Heb. 9:27a time to die; 2 A time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted;

3 A time to kill, and a time to heal; 3 A time to break down, and a time to build up;

4 A time to weep, and a time to laugh; 4 A time to mourn, and a time to dance;

5 A time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together; 5 A time to embrace, and Joel 2:16;1 Cor. 7:5a time [b]to refrain from embracing;

6 A time to [c]get, and a time to lose; 6 A time to keep, and a time to cast away;

7 A time to rent, and a time to sew; 7 Amos 5:13A time to keep silence, and a time to speak;

8 A time to love, and a time to Luke 14:26hate; 8 A time of war, and a time of peace.

9 ch. 1:3What profit hath he that worketh in that wherein he laboureth?

10 ch. 1:13I have seen the travail, which God hath given to the sons of men to be exercised in it.

11 He hath made every thing beautiful in his time: also he hath set the world in their heart, so that ch. 8:17;Rom. 11:33no man can find out the work that God maketh from the beginning to the end.

12 I know that there is no good in them, but for a man to rejoice, and to do good in his life.

13 And also ch. 2:24that every man should eat and drink, and enjoy the good of all his labour, it is the gift of God.

14 I know that, whatsoever God doeth, it shall be for ever: Jas. 1:17nothing can be put to it, nor any thing taken from it: and God doeth it, that men should fear before him.

15 ch. 1:9That which hath been, is now; and that which is to be hath already been; and God requireth [d]that which is past.

Today's (June 18, 2012) Gospel Reading is about

Matthew 5: 38 - 42
38 "You have heard that it was said, `An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.'
39 But I say to you, Do not resist one who is evil. But if any one strikes you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also;
40 and if any one would sue you and take your coat, let him have your cloak as well;
41 and if any one forces you to go one mile, go with him two miles.
42 Give to him who begs from you, and do not refuse him who would borrow from you.

He who fights even the smallest distractions faithfully when he says even the very smallest prayer, will also be faithful in great things.

-- St. Louis de Montfort

and

Psalms 5: 2 - 3, 4 - 7

2Hearken to the sound of my cry, my King and my God, for to thee do I pray.3O LORD, in the morning thou dost hear my voice; in the morning I prepare a sacrifice for thee, and watch.4For thou art not a God who delights in wickedness; evil may not sojourn with thee.5The boastful may not stand before thy eyes; thou hatest all evildoers.6Thou destroyest those who speak lies; the LORD abhors bloodthirsty and deceitful men.7But I through the abundance of thy steadfast love will enter thy house, I will worship toward thy holy temple in the fear of thee.

and

1 Kings 21: 1 - 16

1Now Naboth the Jezreelite had a vineyard in Jezreel, beside the palace of Ahab king of Sama'ria.2And after this Ahab said to Naboth, "Give me your vineyard, that I may have it for a vegetable garden, because it is near my house; and I will give you a better vineyard for it; or, if it seems good to you, I will give you its value in money."3But Naboth said to Ahab, "The LORD forbid that I should give you the inheritance of my fathers."4And Ahab went into his house vexed and sullen because of what Naboth the Jezreelite had said to him; for he had said, "I will not give you the inheritance of my fathers." And he lay down on his bed, and turned away his face, and would eat no food.5But Jez'ebel his wife came to him, and said to him, "Why is your spirit so vexed that you eat no food?"6And he said to her, "Because I spoke to Naboth the Jezreelite, and said to him, `Give me your vineyard for money; or else, if it please you, I will give you another vineyard for it'; and he answered, `I will not give you my vineyard.'"7And Jez'ebel his wife said to him, "Do you now govern Israel? Arise, and eat bread, and let your heart be cheerful; I will give you the vineyard of Naboth the Jezreelite."8So she wrote letters in Ahab's name and sealed them with his seal, and she sent the letters to the elders and the nobles who dwelt with Naboth in his city.9And she wrote in the letters, "Proclaim a fast, and set Naboth on high among the people;10and set two base fellows opposite him, and let them bring a charge against him, saying, `You have cursed God and the king.' Then take him out, and stone him to death."11And the men of his city, the elders and the nobles who dwelt in his city, did as Jez'ebel had sent word to them. As it was written in the letters which she had sent to them,12they proclaimed a fast, and set Naboth on high among the people.13And the two base fellows came in and sat opposite him; and the base fellows brought a charge against Naboth, in the presence of the people, saying, "Naboth cursed God and the king." So they took him outside the city, and stoned him to death with stones.14Then they sent to Jez'ebel, saying, "Naboth has been stoned; he is dead."15As soon as Jez'ebel heard that Naboth had been stoned and was dead, Jez'ebel said to Ahab, "Arise, take possession of the vineyard of Naboth the Jezreelite, which he refused to give you for money; for Naboth is not alive, but dead."16And as soon as Ahab heard that Naboth was dead, Ahab arose to go down to the vineyard of Naboth the Jezreelite, to take possession of it.

an eye for an and a tooth for a tooth yan kasi yung sinusunod ng mga israelites nung old testament..ganti ganti..
pero binago ni Jesus yan sa new testament..if anyone strikes you on the right cheek turn the other also.. means learn to forgive..don't take revenge..leave it all to God.

I'm so glad that we have this forum topic...thanks Ms. J.

6 Huwag mo itong pabayaan at ika'y kanyang iingatan,
   huwag mo siyang iiwanan at ika'y kanyang babantayan.

7 Unahin mo sa lahat, pagtuklas ng karunungan,
   ito'y pilitin mong matamo kahit gaano kamahal.

8 Karununga'y pahalagahan at ika'y kanyang itataas,
   bibigyan kang karangalan kapag iyong niyakap.

     sa gayon ang lakad mo ay laging matiwasay.

27 Huwag kang liliko sa kaliwa o sa kanan;
     humakbang nang papalayo sa lahat ng kasamaan.

Now the word of the LORD came to me saying, "Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, And before you were born I consecrated you; I have appointed you a prophet to the nations." Then I said, "Alas, Lord GOD! Behold, I do not know how to speak, Because I am a youth." But the LORD said to me, "Do not say, 'I am a youth,' Because everywhere I send you, you shall go, And all that I command you, you shall speak. "Do not be afraid of them, For I am with you to deliver you," declares the LORD. Then the LORD stretched out His hand and touched my mouth, and the LORD said to me, "Behold, I have put My words in your mouth.

New International Version ( 1984)
Jesus answered, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.

No man cometh to the Father but by me - To come to the Father is to obtain his favor, to have access to his throne by prayer, and finally to enter his kingdom. No man can obtain any of these things except by the merits of the Lord Jesus Christ. By coming by him is meant coming in his name and depending on his merits. We are ignorant, and he alone can guide us. We are sinful, and it is only by his merits that we can be pardoned. We are blind, and he only can enlighten us. God has appointed him as the Mediator, and has ordained that all blessings shall descend to this world through him. Hence he has put the world under his control; has given the affairs of men into his hand, and has appointed him to dispense whatever may be necessary for our peace, pardon, and salvation, Acts 4:12; Acts 5:31.

June 19, 2012 Gospel

Matthew 5: 43 - 48

43"You have heard that it was said, `You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.'44But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you,45so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven; for he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust.46For if you love those who love you, what reward have you? Do not even the tax collectors do the same?47And if you salute only your brethren, what more are you doing than others? Do not even the Gentiles do the same?48You, therefore, must be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect.

reflection:

Lord, please restrain my lips when I’m tempted to say
what I shouldn’t say about people made in
Your image. Use my words to bless and not harm.
May I reflect Your heart.

I leave you the spirit of liberty - not that which excludes obedience, for that is the liberty of the flesh; but that which excludes restraint, scruple, and worry.  -St. Francis De Sales

1 Kings 21: 17 - 29

17Then the word of the LORD came to Eli'jah the Tishbite, saying,18"Arise, go down to meet Ahab king of Israel, who is in Sama'ria; behold, he is in the vineyard of Naboth, where he has gone to take possession.19And you shall say to him, `Thus says the LORD, "Have you killed, and also taken possession?"' And you shall say to him, `Thus says the LORD: "In the place where dogs licked up the blood of Naboth shall dogs lick your own blood."'"20Ahab said to Eli'jah, "Have you found me, O my enemy?" He answered, "I have found you, because you have sold yourself to do what is evil in the sight of the LORD.21Behold, I will bring evil upon you; I will utterly sweep you away, and will cut off from Ahab every male, bond or free, in Israel;22and I will make your house like the house of Jerobo'am the son of Nebat, and like the house of Ba'asha the son of Ahi'jah, for the anger to which you have provoked me, and because you have made Israel to sin.23And of Jez'ebel the LORD also said, `The dogs shall eat Jez'ebel within the bounds of Jezreel.'24Any one belonging to Ahab who dies in the city the dogs shall eat; and any one of his who dies in the open country the birds of the air shall eat."25(There was none who sold himself to do what was evil in the sight of the LORD like Ahab, whom Jez'ebel his wife incited.26He did very abominably in going after idols, as the Amorites had done, whom the LORD cast out before the people of Israel.)27And when Ahab heard those words, he rent his clothes, and put sackcloth upon his flesh, and fasted and lay in sackcloth, and went about dejectedly.28And the word of the LORD came to Eli'jah the Tishbite, saying,29"Have you seen how Ahab has humbled himself before me? Because he has humbled himself before me, I will not bring the evil in his days; but in his son's days I will bring the evil upon his house."

Psalms 51: 3 - 6, 11, 16

3For I know my transgressions, and my sin is ever before me.4Against thee, thee only, have I sinned, and done that which is evil in thy sight, so that thou art justified in thy sentence and blameless in thy judgment.5Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, and in sin did my mother conceive me.6Behold, thou desirest truth in the inward being; therefore teach me wisdom in my secret heart.11Cast me not away from thy presence, and take not thy holy Spirit from me.16For thou hast no delight in sacrifice; were I to give a burnt offering, thou wouldst not be pleased.

Responsorial Psalm, Psalms 51:3-4, 5-6, 11, 16

3 For I am well aware of my offences, my sin is constantly in mind.

4 Against you, you alone, I have sinned, I have done what you see to be wrong, that you may show your saving justice when you pass sentence, and your victory may appear when you give judgement,

5 remember, I was born guilty, a sinner from the moment of conception.

6 But you delight in sincerity of heart, and in secret you teach me wisdom.

11 do not thrust me away from your presence, do not take away from me your spirit of holiness.

16 Sacrifice gives you no pleasure, burnt offering you do not desire.

Gospel, Matthew 5:43-48

43 'You have heard how it was said, You will love your neighbour and hate your enemy.

44 But I say this to you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you;

45 so that you may be children of your Father in heaven, for he causes his sun to rise on the bad as well as the good, and sends down rain to fall on the upright and the wicked alike.

46 For if you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Do not even the tax collectors do as much?

47 And if you save your greetings for your brothers, are you doing anything exceptional?

48 Do not even the gentiles do as much? You must therefore be perfect, just as your heavenly Father is perfect.'

Tuesday (June 19):
“Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you”

Scripture: Matthew 5:43-48

43 "You have heard that it was said, `You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.' 44 But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, 45 so that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven; for he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust. 46 For if you love those who love you, what reward have you? Meditation: What makes Christians different from others and what makes Christianity distinct from any other religion? It is grace – treating others, not as they deserve, but as God wishes them to be treated – with loving-kindness and mercy. God is good to the unjust as well as the just. His love embraces saint and sinner alike. God seeks our highest good and teaches us to seek the greatest good of others, even those who hate and abuse us. Our love for others, even those who are ungrateful and selfish towards us, must be marked by the same kindness and mercy which God has shown to us. It is easier to show kindness and mercy when we can expect to benefit from doing so. How much harder when we can expect nothing in return. Our prayer for those who do us ill both breaks the power of revenge and releases the power of love to do good in the face of evil. How can we possibly love those who cause us harm or ill-will? With God all things are possible. He gives power and grace to those who believe and accept the gift of the Holy Spirit. His love conquers all, even our hurts, fears, prejudices and griefs. Only the cross of Jesus Christ can free us from the tyranny of malice, hatred, revenge, and resentment and gives us the courage to return evil with good. Such love and grace has power to heal and to save from destruction. Do you know the power of Christ’s redeeming love and mercy?

Was Jesus exaggerating when he said we must be perfect as our heavenly Father is perfect? The original meaning of “perfect” in Aramaic is “completeness” or “wholeness – not lacking in what is essential.” God gives us every good gift in Jesus Christ so that we may not lack anything we need to do his will and to live as his sons and daughters (2 Peter 1:3). He knows our weakness and sinfulness better than we do. And he assures us of his love, mercy, and grace to follow in his ways. Do you want to grow in your love for God and for your neighbor? Ask the Holy Spirit to change and transform you in the image of the Father that you may walk in the joy and freedom of the gospel.

“Lord Jesus, your love brings freedom and pardon. Fill me with your Holy Spirit and set my heart ablaze with your love that nothing may make me lose my temper, ruffle my peace, take away my joy, nor make me bitter towards anyone.”

44 But I say this to you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you;

Do not even the tax collectors do the same? 47 And if you salute only your brethren, what more are you doing than others? Do not even the Gentiles do the same? 48 You, therefore, must be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect.
