| first of all yung laban ni mark barriga against kazakhstan was not a boxing match...it was wrestling! sayang si jessie lacuna...guys he is my high school classmate's brother and those lacunas were very well known in our school for swimming tungkol naman sa athletes natin... we cant always blame government support,funding,training.... i was also a swimmer in college... i had a coach but mostly pushed myself to train...and nagbunga rin naman nasa athlete din yun...kulang sa motivation,spirit...or too intimidated kaya sila? malaki sana ang potential ng filipinos... |

| Barriga out of the Olympics by Rappler.com Posted on 08/04/2012 9:13 PM | Updated 08/05/2012 11:05 AM MANILA, Philippines (UPDATED) - Filipino boxer Mark Barriga lost to Kazakhstan's Birzhan Zhakypov, 17-16 on Saturday, August 4 at their round of 16 light flyweight fight at the London Olympics. The loss ends the Olympic stint of Barriga, the Philippines' best bet in the Games. Barriga lost to Zhakypov in the first round, 5-4, after the latter came out more agressive and Barriga was limited to counterpunching. But the Filipino fighter made up for it, coming out stronger on the second round, and leading Zhakypov 10-8 before he entered the third round. The final three minutes of the fight proved to be the downfall for Barriga. Both Barriga and Zhakypov received a warning each for wrestling-like moves, but Barriga later received a penalty for headbutting, which granted Zhakypov two extra points. Barriga was also overpowered several times by a frustrated Zhakypov in the third round, and was lifted and brought to the floor by his bigger opponent. Towards the end, the 19-year-old Filipino started to wear out, moving visibly slower and becoming less agressive. The penalty Barriga received proved to be costly, as Zhakypov came out victorious by only one point. Without the penalty, Barriga would've won the fight. This is the fourth Olympics in a row that a Filipino boxer failed to advance past the second round. The last time a boxer won in the Olympics was when Onyok Velasco took home the silver medal in the 1996 Atlanta Games. That was also the Philippines' last Olympic medal. Three more athletes from Team Philippines are still competing in London, namely Marestella Torres-Long Jump (Aug. 7) and Rene Herrera- 5,000m Race (Aug 8) for track and field, and Daniel Caluag for Cycling/BMX.- Rappler.com
Rene Herrera- 5,000m Race (Aug 8 5:45pm-6:21am (Manila time) Daniel Caluag - for Cycling/BMX (Aug.8 & 9 10:40pm-11:23pm(Manila Time)
http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xsma6c_04082012bari_shortfilms Message appended on August 8, 2012 03:45AM InterAKTV · Wednesday, August 8, 2012 · 3:02 am Filipino long jump queen Marestella Torres failed to qualify for the finals of the long jump competition, bringing an end to her London 2012 campaign Tuesday (Wednesday morning in Manila). Torres’ best jump of 6.22 meters in her last attempt fell way short of the qualifying threshold. She jumped 5.89 meters and 6.21 meters in her first two attempts. Her mark left her in 22nd place in a field of 28 athletes. It was a disappointing finish for Torres, who set a Southeast Asian Games record of 6.71 meters last November. Equaling that mark, her personal best, would have qualified her for the finals. With her elimination, only two Filipino bets are left standing in London: runner Rene Herrera, who will compete in the 5000m race and Filipino-American bicyclist Daniel Caluag, who will see action in the BMX competition. Rene Herrera 5:45pm-6:21am (Manila time) August 8 Daniel Caluag 10:40pm-11:23pm (Manila time) August 8 View message logs madz0529: appended post on August 8, 2012 03:45AM madz0529: updated on August 8, 2012 03:37AM madz0529: updated on August 8, 2012 02:57AM |

| numbers will bring us the Gold. we should train and send more athletes. problem is, is it worth investing in it. i'm not sure what are the benefits for our country of winning medals. |

| i suggest we should just concentrate on individual events and not team events, lesser ang cost nito compared sa team events. |

Intelenet Majestic Sulitizen 7187 posts | benefactors should be big companies. they can afford to support individual athletes as a form of advertising. the program adopt an athlete was good, but they have to be able to provide a training program that benefactors will believe in. |

| it will still be the usa and china competing for supremacy on the next olympics, china will really try hard to reclaim it in brazil ? for the next olympics. the other countries still has a long way to go before they can compete against the two sports superpowers. |
